Was wondering if you knew why Yamaha used the style of bearing they did for the swingarm pivot point? (conical?)and not a regular style ball bearing. I ask because I am going to fabricate a custom swing arm and was planning to use regular style bearings or maybe even bushings.

Possibly for centering the swingarm with the least amout of friction. Also to allow for preload, maybe related to it being shaft-drive?
Just musing here.

Well I just got off the phone with a tech support guy for sprocket specialists.com and I believe we may have found a 13 and/or 14 tooth sprocket to fit our machines. It is a replacement for a 66-69 Honda CB 77. I just got done ordering one for 25.00 and will let ya know if it will work or not. The part # for them is 506-13 if you want to take a look.
Have a good day,
Steve

Audi, brilliant detective work! Those C77 front sprockets sound like they're compatible, here's a quote from a webpage
- Sprocket Specialists produces high quality replacement sprockets for most make and model machines. Case hardened and precision cut for excellent fit and finish.
Fits: Honda CB75 Hawk 1964 to 1966 CB77 1966 to 1969 CL77 1966 to 1968 also fits Yamaha TX/XS650 upto 1983 and TX750A 1973 to 1974
SS # 506 13 TOOTH Front Sprocket 530 Chain size
Here's a pic of the C77 pattern, and it sure looks the same as the XS
PS the bearing in question is a side thrust bearing that handles the sideways force coming from the right-angle bevel, only needed if running the shaftdrive, there's no torque reaction with a sprocket so a 'normal' bearing does the trick.
I've ordered 506 countershaft sprockets from Sprocket Specialists for my XS650 (all models) in 520 or 530 chain. I use 520 X-ring by D.I.D. They list 13T to 18T chromloly steel. On page 52 of my catalog.
Cheers, 50gary

Yeah I've got 4 of them and I thought that was a lot! Looks like "Sprocket Specialists' are about the only manufacturer to supply those XS650/C77 sprockets smaller than the usual stock 16-17 tooth http://www.sprocketspecialists.com/S...?txtSearch=506
Good to know I won't have to resort to those rip-off machinists again, although a US$25 sprocket will probably still cost 50$NZ down here.
Hey pggg, if you think it would be cheaper for me to purchase them, then mail them to you I could do that. If you need any?

IT fits, it fits, LIKE A GLOVE.
hey PGGG,
How did you get the holes lined up on the plate for the extended bolts. I have cut my housing, And traced the gasket on a piece of metal but cant figure out how to precisely figure out where to drill the holes for the outer bearing housing. I am sure they need to be perfect to keep the shaft straight.
Thanks

Matching holes to copy to a steel plate, the holes in the gasket give 4 of them, then a matter of positioning another middle hole to match the chrome cover, the gasket sits in only one position, find that, pinpoint the hidden hole position on the gasket with a ballpoint pen, the chrome cover gives the remaining hole position.
Further 4 more holes up front aligned with front engine case bolts, I cut down some 6mm bolts, screwed them into the engine case, painted a tiny thick blob of paint on the ends(dead centre) and unscrewed the bolts slowly a couple of mm's till the paint left pinpricks on the steel plate
I guess you didnt use the two holes to the far right to allow for chain clearance? The one with xx on it and the one above?
