It's all profiteering. The oil companies know thier product is on the cut list, and are trying to get what they can for it fast.

Unfortunately, by doing htis they guarantee the process will speed up.

Market forces are a part, but only because they can manipulate the market to cause these forces.

High taxes is dependant on where you are.

None of the envirnmental laws for gas companies are insane. We just don't need the stuff nearly as badly as they say we do (see market forces)

We are never going to run out of oil. There is far more left in the ground than we can burn without ruining the rest of our atmosphere.

Well, here in the states everyone seems to want to blame the oil companies for high prices. While they are not free of blame we need to look at the facts.

Oil Companies DON'T make the huge profit the government tells you they do, the government makes more
            - The government would like you to believe that they want to raise the tax on oil companies because they say the oil companies have a HUGE profit. In reality the oil companies only make 8.5% profit which is less than half of the money the government makes off of the taxes they impose on oil companies. For every gallon of gas sold oil companies make $0.085, the government makes $0.18 for every gallon, who's making more money? Also there are plenty of industries with a much higher profit margain than the oil companies, here's a list. glennbeck.com

I think you meant to say for every dollar of gas sold oil company's make $0.085, for every gallon - at least here their making more like $0.34. ($4.00 x $0.085).
This complicates things as I'm not sure if you were right on your tax statement, is it 18% - as in $0.18 per dollar - roughly double oil company profit, or is it correctly stated as $0.18 per gallon, roughly half oil company profit?

The reason their posting huge profits is volume $0.34 times a gazillion gallons of gas (or however much America uses in 3 months - quarterly profits) is a ton of money. In most everything the more of something you produce the lower your profit margin because your dealing in "bulk" so you need to make less on each unit sold to turn a profit. Not saying oil companies are ripping us off or not but Its important to look at the whole picture. Saying 8.5% sounds so low and is misleading because it fails to take into account the volume of sales. Look at that list, beverage brewers make only slightly more profit and I think its fair to assume most of us use more gas in a day then we drink some "beverage", excluding water. Again bulk allows brewers to sell more at a lower profit per unit.

My not be much to you but to me I think thy need to be put in jail.

This is how they can afford to give the scumbag McCain 2 million dollars.

When did it become evil to make money in this country! I just don’t get it. Stop listening to the hype.

They made a very large profit, yes, which is because they sell a product that EVERYONE uses with practically no exceptions. Their percentage is still lower than most any other industry. Read the post.
So should the oil companies give the gas away? Do you want the gas to just stop flowing? You will not be able to ride that xs anymore if it did my friend.
Besides, millions of Americans should be happy the oil companies made a big profit. Nearly every 401K, 403B, mutual fund etc. have investments in oil. I personally want my retirement to grow and make money not loose it.

Everyone acts like the price at the pump is only because of Exxon’s profit percentages, it isnt its also (and mainly) the import price of oil per barrel. Stop the foreign oil dependence and the price goes down.

Of course we could just do what B-Ho says and air up our tires, and get a "tune up" but who wants to do that

And on a side note... scumbag McCain? Why is he a scumbag? Everyone, even most Demms loved him 6 months ago.
He may not be the savior, but he is far better than the liberal fascist alternative.

                    Sigh...

I could go on but i had best stop now before I get my blood to boilin'!

(That question doesn't even deserve an answer... as it sort of answers itself)

While it's perfectly acceptable, and often required, to call politicians "scumbags", it is not acceptable to resort to name calling of other members due to the perceived wrongness of their political choices.
No.. it hasn't started in this thread yet... just tryin' to ensure that it doesn't.

I now return you to the "Current Gas Prices" thread.

                            • I am so glad I get all the free gas I want. Sometimes I take the long way to work. I seriously don't even look at the prices, just stop and fill up where ever I want. I drive about 35,000 miles a year too. One of the few perks of my job.

                              • I agree with my fellow moderator Prom, never ever resort to name calling. You have to always take what folks post with a grain of salt and a smile. I would have this conversation with Winterhawk over coffee have the same passion and still smile and call him friend. Its hard to do that with words only and no face or voice expression.
So please note that all I ever say here is with a bit of a smile and friendship, even when we disagree. Especially when it comes to politics and religion.

BTW I do not and have never been an oil company worker, and I don't play one on TV.
Although you have to admit, that Exxon CEO gig sounds pretty sweet.
