      The XS650 from 1977 on has the same caliper as the standard XS11. Shop for XS650 shims if you don’t want to make them. The should be cheaper than XS11 parts.

          Those are not the correct ones in that link, I didn't see the correct type anywhere on the MikesXs website.

            Squealing coming back after I put the shims in. (many,many bad words ). What would happen if I took the glaze off the rotors with a wire wheel? Has anyone tried this or would it just cause faster pad wear? There's a kit available at MikesXS that replaces all the other metal bits surrounding the pads: https://www.mikesxs.net/yamaha-xs650...045-02-00.html - might try those. Looked up shims for a 77 XS650 and they want to sell you a kit (pads/shims/clips) only.(lower part group #15) Maybe I'll just bite the bullet and get 2 of those.

                Those are for bikes 1976 and earlier.

                  I have an XS650 with a squealing brake. The backing shims are in place. I cleaned the rotor and pad faces with garnet paper and Brake Clean. The squealing went away….. for a little while. My next step is pad replacement. I have new ones. I just need to do it.

                    That's a good point about the pads themselves. There are all sorts of brake compounds such a sintered, Kevlar, ceramic and organic. Perhaps the pad material could be changed to something that does not resonate as much. I think organic brake pads are considered the quietest and do the least damage to the rotors. Sintered can be harsh to rotors and probably squeak the most.

                        Deebs11 - thanks for the link - I kinda knew it was too good to be true - read down the page and got "Does not ship to Canada". (lots of very bad words) I'ii try and source north of the 49th.

                          Did you use hi temp brake grease on the front and back of the shim or did you put it together dry?

                          Just to add, I've used 80 grit on a sanding disk with a cross hatch pattern, that also seems to help. Sometimes it will last, sometimes not.

                            bikerphil - only applied grease on the side contacting the puck. Quick tear-down and I'll be a little more liberal with it. Been looking into organic or semi-sintered pads - found some EBC FA34 organic units available on Amazon.

                            At over $40 a set not cheap. Made in the UK - any thoughts from across the pond?

                            DEEBS11 - Dennis Kirk doesn't have enough semi-sintered or organic on hand right now (might as well replace all 3 sets) - but thanks for the info anyway.

                              It probably does not matter what country you are getting them from. My guess is almost all of them are made in China anyway. I try to stay with the organic pads on my XS1100's. The newer bikes, sintered or ceramic pads as they are designed for them.
