so we're sure this bolt should be loose, right? Everyone I talk to here in real life thinks the bolt should have shrunk away from the housing as soon as it cooled.

Yeah it's a pretty blue, but just because you're old is no excuse to buy a bagger. Fortunately I have wrenches.

      aLRIGHTY THEN....
i dont know if it's pipe threads or not, but it is now

I tried to go slow so as to feel the threads aligning or not, but after about a quarter turn with resistance, I figured I'd probably buggered up the threads. About that time, the bolt broke free. Now then....I have a replacement if my threads do turn out to be damaged. It's aftermarket. How do I verify check valve operation?

For those keeping score, I think the small O-Ring that seals the hole to the bypass valve assembly (bolt) melted when the nut was being welded to the bolt head.

I'm glad you got the bolt out of the housing!

Now check the steel bolt, you should be able to see any thread damage and it should thread back into the engine without any resistance at all so it doesn't rip the aluminum threads. Don't keep turning if it starts to bind, just back it out and stop.

I never expected to run into this, but on one (probably more, when i get to them) of my exhaust headers, there is a small fitting with a hex head screw sticking out of it. I dont reckon there's probably an emission control system on my G, but it looks suspiciously like an Oxy sensor tap. Whats up

            Hey there,

The bypass valve in the filter bolt is just secured by a spring, so you should be able to see the spring, and take a phillips screw driver and insert it into one of the holes just below the valve ball opposite of the spring, and gently pry up against the ball to verify that the ball will move towards the spring. IT's designed so that IF the filter gets totally clogged so that oil won't flow thru it into the filter bolt, then the oil pressure will push the ball up by entering into the filter bolt BELOW the fitment point of the oil filter, and will push the ball valve up to allow the oil to get past it so that the engine keeps being lubricated....albeit with UNFILTERED oil, but that's better than NO OIL at all.

Yeah, bolt O-ring probably did get melted a bit and glued to the filter housing, I would have thought just some turning of the bolt with a wrench and some spray lube/penetrating oil would have been sufficient to get the bolt spinning and then allow it to be worked out of the cup.

The OEM pipes are double walled, and I've read that the bolt was to seal it up and to allow drainage of condensation or such. The size of the hole/bung that it's bolted/screwed into is probably way too small for an actual O2 sensor.

Thanks Cat. Moisture drain does make more sense than electronics. Since I've baited you into the exhaust conversation, what am i looking for to release my header pipes from the mufflers and/or various plumbing? (I think I'm going to wrap the pipes)

                  Exhaust Gas Analyzer?

I think those hex fittings in the exhaust pipes might be for access for an exhaust gas analyzer to correctly set the idle mixture screws at the dealership.

One of my exhausts has them. I read in other posts that the service replacements seemed to have them more than the original pipes.

                    next

The current oil bypass checkvalve seems to be functionally springy, but since the O Ring is damaged I'm going with the replacement (original). Got the drain plug back in, exhaust nuts (removed a header to access filter housing) ordered, and a carb boot clamp ordered. Having the usual Partzilla delay, but I'm growing accustomed.

Once the crankcase is filled up and the bike's running, I will begin tackling other items......

SWMBO is intent on hand painting some scenery on my luggage and side covers, and I'm not inclined to argue, as she's a beautiful artist, and, of course, SWMBO. Kind of makes my keep/remove decision on the accessories pretty simple.

The guards for the hardbags are likely to get an LED treatment, and the bags themselves might lose LEDs and pick up some speakers.

Caved to the landlord. Been working on the Dor Max in the body shop of the car dealer where I work, and the painters have cornered me and convinced me to put a new finish on her. Currently it looks like the fairing will go away, to possibly be replaced by a removable windshield, if I can find such an animal. Kurt's sport fairings are calling my name, but well, my bike may be special to me, but it's not a Special. The bags and side covers will be repainted in Ruby Red, and the Tank with a two tone scheme similar to the one Doug posted in the "what did you do today?" thread. The Red will not be authentic 80s yamajammer New Ruby Red, but it'll do.

While I'm waiting for key transit, I'm plugging the oil holes (reinstalling filter and housing and drain plug) filling the crankcase, scheming about lighting options, weighing the relative merits of retaining the fairing or purchasing a plain windshield, in other words, a lot of mental, um, considerating. I managed to lose one of my extra filter elements and my only extra o ring, so I ordered a handful of o rings from the 'zilla, got those in, now just need to turn and torque a few things. all the blue parts are off to be ruby & creamed, except the aforementioned fairing. Thinking I'll leave off everything I take off, until after I move her back to her winter quarters. This monster is tough to move on and off a trailer, as I'm sure any of you who have done so recall.

thinking of wrapping LEDs on the signal stems and on the bag protectors. May be spiraled around, or just zip tied to. plan to be diligent about legal requirements.

                            Hey there Puskrat,

This might be an easier way, I got these but ran out time to put them on mine, and I also needed to get the reverse threading adapters from either MikesXS or PNM to be able to put the right hand one on since it has regular threads instead of reverse like Yamaha has.

I know, they are rectangular instead of round, but I think they would match the Standard's rectangular format better anyways!
