        Point of interest

I just pulled the front wheel off my XS1100. The tire on there is a Metzeler ME880. Sitting nearby is another wheel with a Dunlop GT501 on it. Both tires are serviced with air and both are 100/90-19. The Metzeler looks bigger. If my memory serves, the Dunlop measured less than 97 mm wide. The Metzeler measured more than 105 mm wide. I always knew the tire wouldn't necessarily be 100 mm wide, but almost 10 mm difference is more than I expected to see.

Yeah, I usually run a 110 on the front of my Special. I had to do a little tweaking of the inside of the fender edges and I have to let the air out to slide it up in, but I like that little extra rubber footprint where all your stopping power is.

Anyone thinking of getting a Dunlop D404 think about this..........

This tire was all but new before I left for The Lost Rally. 2100 miles and it's right on the wear bars. I wasn't sure it was going to make it home. It wore down FAST.

Have those on the Venturer, knowing they are Dunflops low-end tire, but it doesn't get to run on LD rides. They are also almost at the wear bars on the rear with just under 4K on them. Glad they at least made the distance for you BA80!

I knew the D404s were not a great tire but being the cheap a$$ I am I just couldn't bring myself to junk a tire with as much tread as it had.

                  I'm good now.

                        I still like E3s but a rear tire costs $150 + now.

It feels great and is the best set of tires I have had on the XS11.

I can see it if I knew I was going on a long trip like you did, but for the price of that Michilin, I can buy almost 3 of the Shinko 712's. That would put me at @ 18k miles worth of rubber, so go ride some more and get back to me to see how many miles you get out of that, will you? Just let your son ride it while you're gone, and the tire may outlast the bike?

I think Tod just likes to change tires.

That's close to the same price as an E3. I wonder how it handles compared to the Dunlop.

I'd like to know how many miles people are getting out of the new E3's. Last couple I had only lasted 7-9k miles. Bob Embrey, though he rides fairly conservatively, said his E3 rear still had good tread left on it and had over 20k miles on it when he sold his XJ. It was several years old though... back when they were still making them good.

I'm still curious about the new Metzler 888 ultra. One dollar more than the E3, but they advertise it as "The best mileage period". Of course, the Michilin Commander 2 basically says the same thing in their advertising.. lol. All three are within six bucks of each other.
