  • Pulling my new purchase apart. 1982 XJ1100 with 16K miles on it that sat for a few years. The air box was a pain as always to pull off. Carbs are off and ready to go through. Surprising unmolested bike. I paid $450 for it so I couldn't loose money on it.

I was really looking for a bike to go retro with, but I think I'm just going to restore this one.

    • My XJ's Start interlock relay quit working and the bike wouldn't start. Bummer!

I deleted the Start interlock relay and de-fanged the Sidestand relay but left it operational. The XJ's Atari diagnostic computer will still warn when the sidestand is down but the bike starts and runs like the XS11.

I removed the Start interlock relay, then made a jumper for the two Red/White wires in the harness connector that go to the Ignition/Start circuit. I wrapped the connector and jumper in some of Marty's self-amalgamating F4 tape, then put a heat-shrink sleeve over the whole enchilada and tucked it up into the frame to keep it out of trouble.

While I was making wiring mods I removed the Black/White wire from the harness connector for the Sidestand relay, then wrapped the bare spade terminal in F4 tape. The B/W wire is the same wire used for the Tipover switch. If the transmission is not in Neutral and you put the sidestand down or the switch wears out or one of the wires shorts, the TCI is grounded and kills the engine.

      • Installing new bags today and found that the rear part of the frame was pushed over about 1/4" by that North Carolina guard rail. Gotta fix that so everything centers up right.

        • Finally installed the new AGM battery that arrived 3 or so weeks ago in the 80SG. Looking forward to a good service life out of it. The battery I received was a Kinetic brand, took about 6 hours @2A to reach full charge, so it was mostly charged as received.

FWIW, the OEM Yuasa AGM in my 2001 ZRX1200 is still in the bike. It is not as strong as a few years ago, but will get me through this winter until spring when I want to replace it with a lighter weight lithium battery. The Japanese made Yuasa batteries of that vintage were very well made, and supposedly it is the "virgin" lead that leads to the long life. New Yuasa batteries bought as replacements are made in the USA using recycled lead, and that is a main reason I have been told they don't last nearly as long.

In case anyone wanted to know...

                • Got the frame straightened, New bags installed and the running lights/turn signals mounted and working. Gotta get the new luggage rack mounted and the trunk mounting plate installed and I'll be done in the rear.
Then to get started on the front.

                        • Thanks once again to Mark Lew for getting these and installing them for me...and Thanks to Kurt for bringing these to our attention...they looked awesome on your bikes at XSSE...
BTW these are Cree Laser Gun U2/U3 LEDs...30w ...with High beam..low beam and a strobe mode as well..I'm still working out the proper light pattern for diffusion of light but as they sit now they light up everything with authority...How is it i survived all these years without this kind of aux. lights?

                            • I guess they are spot...but i like them..I need more adjustments to get the proper light pattern but i am most primarily concerned with being seen than actually seeing with them..but as they sit I am quite pleased with them...They have to be ordered from China and they takke about a month to get here...But for 24 bucks you cant beat 'em
