I'm laughing too - 'cause I bought that same windshield on account of that picture. Way too short, and I got so much buffeting from it that my eyes wouldn't focus. It had to go.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

    • It's legit

Today I put the shiny new tag on the XJ's license plate and the new registration went under the seat with the insurance paper.

No more worries about having "The Conversation" in mid-ride because the tags were expired even though the paperwork is valid. Yay!

        • What I did....lost my keys.

Actually, I realized today that I previously lost my keys. Luggage key I know I can replace and have the bags re-keyed. Is there a way to find the key code for a 35 year old motorcycle?

Yeah it's a pretty blue, but just because you're old is no excuse to buy a bagger. Fortunately I have wrenches.

          • Had some fun

Today I dug out and dusted off the new tires I bought for my '79 Special but haven't used. The XJ needs new shoes so that's where they're going when the wheels come off.

I've tried to avoid third-party programs and stick with the built-in tools that come with Windows 10 but I got a deal on the Nero 2017 ultrasuperdeluxkitchensink edition so of course I had to try out the Video Tool and see if it worked.

            It worked.

you would need to pull the ignition switch to see of the code sticker is still on it.

              • Yeah-- Nov. 14 in N. MI seems the right time. I am storing my F an hour from home, so I rode it there this morning. Sorta cool (48*), but a very nice ride, nonetheless. I will winterize it soon, as the weatherman is calling for crud soon. Did not ride enough this season, but I guess everyone says that.

                • Part way through fairing removal. Moved cordless drill into the shop, realized I left the adaptor thingy necessary to use sockets and accessories with said drill at home.

Oh, as posted in my resto/destro thread, I recovered lost keys a few days ago.

                  I need lunch.

Glad you found them.......now, have an extra made and scotch-loc(Velcro on steroids) on the bike somewhere(fairing compartment,etc.). Most all of us long time, many decade riders have done exactly that.

                    • Slipping Clutch

Looks like I finally got the bike to this point which means I am at least riding it. I changed the oil for a second time to get this machine nice a clean inside. It sat for about 5 or 6 years before I restored it. Running better and better. I even had to adjust the idle down so the fuel is flowing well.

Question, is Barnett the way to go or is there a newer clutch fix?

First the obligatory basic questions, #1; are you certain the clutch is adjusted right at BOTH ends? #2 Are you running the correct oil in the crank case/ clutch?

If you answered both questions yes then the next step is replace the clutch springs and yes, Barnetts are the ONLY way to go there in my opinion.

Thank you for the feedback. I will double check the clutch adjustment before making the modification. Bike is really running strong and is a lot of fun.

                          • Fired up Ol' Okie a little bit ago, it's been a couple months. A quite a bit of smoke out of the left side for a while until it warmed/cleared up. Valve seals looks like.

He still runs like a champ though. I think that climb to the top of Pikes Peak last summer may have disagreed with him.

Gonna need a valve job soon.

                            • Today I fixed an oil leak that waa left over from my head replacement. Got in a nice after-rain ride. Then got stuck in another storm. Looks like a ride home through the Pennsylvania freezing rain... Oh well, shes running like a champ, so it shouldnt be too bad.

As I've said, I'm going with this look, a little less pink. Tank, sides, and outer fairing were supposed to get refinish this week. They didn't make it.

Painting the bags, too, and maybe a warbonnet style plastic fender if I can scrounge one. The bags and fairing, however, are staying off for the time being. All the windshields I can find are shaped to fit behind a round headlight. If I can't find one with a rectangle cutout, or a round headlight to mount, I'll keep the Venturer fairing, but I'm not in love with it.
