  • Greg!

Brant, I scuffed my boot a little but that's it.

A little more chrome got scraped off one spot on the rear saddlebag crash bar and the front crash bar but they were already scraped when I got them so pffft!

    It's all good!

Nice.......just shined up the existing patina a bit. BTDT.....helps keep any rust build up to a minimum in those areas.

I learned a neat trick the other day from Bigfoot so I did not try to put my foot down and catch the bike. Thank! You! Harry!

My neighbors immediately ran out to make sure I was alright and helped get Columbo back on his 'feet'. I'm not really surprised but definitely pleased that the tip-over switch and the fuel shut-offs all work just fine and dandy!

          • My dad had gone down low-speed in our sub right after fixing the turbo on his Seca, in-front of all the neighbors. Did a lot of damage. He was furious. Still remember that day. Kudos to your cool head.

            • Hit 112

Was checking the new steering head bearings and forks.
180 kph or 112mph. Think Yami can do 120. Was going up hill. Windy day and was just getting some buffeting. Smaller front window would lessen I think. Also had on the two big saddle bags and a large bag back across the back.
Much smoother in the corners. Have the forks a bit too stiff, which can cause the front wheel to squiggle and bounce off course. Easy to fix.

                  • Addie became Subtracty today as we(I use the term lightly) removed the engine. We had to remove quite a lot of things before it would come out. The fairing with its bracket which involved the oil cooler also had to come off.

                    • Probably easier to just replace the head if the stud is that difficult to get out.

                      • I noticed the other day that the diaphragm in my vacuum advance pot was leaking. It still worked but when I put vacuum to it it wouldn't hold. So I replaced it.

I was out running errands this morning and had about 90 miles on a tank of gas and figured the light would pop on any minute and I would need to switch to reserve. Nope. It went to 102 before the light came on and 104 before I had to switch.

If you mileage is getting bad, check the vacuum advance pot. It makes a difference.

                        • You take ONE day to go riding and look what happens!

                          Greg,

Oh, yeah! It's definitely the humility-factor, "keeps you humble!"

All of my experience, the books, the riding rules of the road, etc. all say to cross paint or railroad tracks first, upright, then lean or turn. I got careless because I was only going about three or four MPH but ... d'oh!

Nice catch on the vacuum advance, too!

                          Brant,

Some ebil jeenyus decided to paint double-yellow lines on our residential street. When we first moved in there weren't any lines at all, then the city put down spaced white lines, then they laid down double-yellows. There's no reason for it that anyone has been able to figure out other than one of the paint contractors was the Mayor's cousin, brother-in-law or something and the city has just continued to repaint the lines as double-yellows through inertia.

                          Ian,

It's difficult to fight the urge to put your foot down but I think Bigfoot gave a pretty darned good demonstration of what not to do -- or else!

Your dad dropped a turbo? Yee-ouch!

                          Unkle Crusty,

Be careful you don't over tighten the new steering head bearings. The front end can "stick" at speed or it'll mess up the bearing races, then you'll have to take it apart and replace them all over again.

You'll get different variations of hopping, twitching, writhing, wriggling, or tank-slapping at speed depending on:

                          cojones, 2 ea., size of
steering head and swingarm bearing adjustment and positioning
odd little aerodynamic quirks with the fairing and bags
front and rear tire tread patterns, tire wear and pressures
                          wheel bearings
front brake caliper drag/sticking and/or warped brake disk(s).

                          mikubuilder,

Hang on to that lid! It's got the street-custom camouflage design -- very nice; hard to duplicate and costs extra!

                          Phil,

You had to pull the engine? Whoah! What Greg said!

Whole you're in there changing the head, try to get one with newer cams and fewer miles on the valves!

                          • I tell you, with cars coming from both sides, and lid laying in the middle of the road, I did the best u-turn I ever had, and made it just in time to grab it, before it got crushed by oncoming traffic

Tinman tells me he has the stud out and new one installed.
As we did not have another head lying around we would have had to buy it and a gasket set. This head was off a while back so the valves have all been freshened and good springs and seals so no advantage in changing it.
