Sounds like the pick up coil wires are shorting to the neutral light switch inside the wire loom. Ground the neutral switch wire and see if it works then.

I disconnected the neutral light ages ago and lost the little screw so it never got hooked backup.

Well DUH! Of course with just that little yellow hammer and the really big hammer you can't see.

Nah this has been going on for a while. I did use real tools for this one. Especially my little Dremel when i had to cut most of the electrical box off. This thing was a major rust bucket. When I get done it won't be completely stock mainly because too many rusted parts that I don't really want to search for and pay stupid prices for. So I will improvise as I go along.

I do have a new square dual headlight set up I plan on using. It's a little smller than the stock but should work fine.

I am trying to get the cafe racer finished first and then I can really dive in to this one.

Wet Cell Batteries

This is just a reminder to those with the wet cell batteries. I am doing my regular spring time service, changing the 75w140 synth in the middle and final drives, checking tires and shocks/forks, battery, ect. ect. and my battery was pretty low. I put in a little more than a pint of distilled water.

It'll keep that battery healthy and keep you from walking.

One of my MC batteries was boiled down essentially dry over the winter by the HF tender.

I always measure the cheap HF tenders and sort them before I assign them to a battery (Boat, MCs, Lawn Mower, Motorhome, etc.) This tender was 11.8V.

I know electrolyte boils around 13.5V, so in the future I'll vow to try to find tenders 12.7-13.2V for the MCs.

Finally finished the front end today:



Repainted the tree, cleaned and greased the head bearing, rebuilt the forks, cleaned and re greased the speedo gears, cleaned, repainted and rebuilt the calipers, repainted the rotors and polished all the nuts and bolts. WHEW!

Change tires with Zip Ties? Brilliant!

This afternoon I changed the back tire on Columbo using the giant zip tie method and some NAPA RuGlyde rubber lube -- totally simple!

It was so easy it was embarrassing remembering paying the dealer ~$50 to change a tire and struggling with tire irons while trying not to mess up the rim.

But I'm tired of greasing the driveshaft and coupler splines. I'm pulling the final drive tomorrow, hopefully for the last time and I'm going to try to drill the coupler for a flush-mount Zerk fitting. If it works I'll drill a hole in the swingarm for the grease gun, put a plug in the hole and do the happiest Snoopy happy dance around the bike ever before I put the hard bags back on.

It's time for the valve clearance check too and that's going to be gangs of fun however the Zerk project turns out. It'll give me a chance to see if the Automatic Cam Chain Tensioner mod has been eating the chain guides or if it's good to go.

Not a good day to work on my bike!

I left my phone in the garage and its battery is flatter than a pancake.

Drilling the final drive coupler for a Zerk fitting is probably not going to happen. I thought it was a good idea but the coupler laughs at drill bits.
What a surprise ....

The new tire isn't seated correctly. The bead/sidewall is too deep in the rim in one spot so it's out of round and I have to let the air out of the tire to massage it into place. Maybe if I glare at it long enough the bead will re-seat itself.

I use a car battery to run a 12v compressor and, unfortunately, the battery almost burned up on the charger last night -- black smoke from the #2 & #3 vents holes next to the Positive terminal (yes, the vent caps were open) and the charger's LED display says, "BAD". So, that battery is toast and I don't have a regular A/C compressor. At least the smart charger (NAPA NBC 85640) was smart enough to shut off and quit charging before the battery exploded and/or caught on fire.

And I still have to pull the fairing to check the valves but that's not looking good for today either.

Tough day huh

Steady as she goes Scott. There are some days you should just leave the shop and find a fridge with a cold one and put your feet up for a day. I've had plenty of them.
