  • Installed new CCT

Did an upgrade today - swapped the original CCT for a new ACCT.

After install, turned engine over a dozen times by hand and cams aligning perfectly. Success!
A big THANKS to ALL that posted Pics and Info about CCT's and CCT Swaps. Carbs & Tank off for cleaning so hope to test ride this weekend after I put in new Steering Head Bearings tomorrow.

    • Steering Bearings

      Well, I got ambitious today!!

Took off the forks and pulled the steering head out to replace the races and bearings. Went pretty smooth with no problems along the way thanks to the info / suggestions / pitfalls / best practices posted on the various threads.

With this fixed I will be able to enjoy the Traxxion Dynamics setup in the forks a bit more. Bike was a handful at higher speed in the twisties since the steering was a bit eratic, notchy, & not smooth. BTW, cutting the races with the dremel made what would be a real tough job almost too simple.

          • I started knocking off mounting tabs for items that were either missing or broken and wouldn't be replaced, relocated mounts for remaining items. Soon will be minimizing the wiring and making sure it all fits before the frame gets blasted and painted.

              Greg,
Did you have to bring that up???? Just gives MaximPhil something to laugh about. So far officers in TN, GA, SC & NC don't seem to mind. They just wave. lol But, I was told (advised) not to try and ride to XS North this way. Yes, have to admit my fancy (but real cheap) sealed beam is still there. Hopefully I will get the nice Pacifico on real soon!!! -along with some additional lighting so people can see me.

              * and yes, I know I haven't gotten the TC fuse box put on either ........

              Phil,
Back together?? WHAT?? I just "take apart". I've got no idea how to get this back together.

After all, this was just a junky Rescue Bike. However, after the XS SE Rally seems to be able to hold its own though. zoom-zoom This has been an interesting project since most parts (except engine) were perma-rusted into place on this thing due to PO neglect.

Over New Years I'll get the cleaned carbs & petrol tank back on along with the forks. May do the TC Fuse Box if I have time.

                Hi Jeff,
thanks for posting that photo, without it I wouldn't have understood the chickenwire headlight reference.
What with that and the nipple pink hardbags betcha you could park that bike anywhere at all and nobody'd dare to steal it.

                • Those bags have cargo netting lids also Fred. I guess that's so you can look inside and see if there's anything you want to steal before hand.

It does run good though, Jeff was right with the pack the whole time at XS Southeast.

                  • Broke it

Hi guys just putting on some things I got for Christmas and one was rebuild kits for the fuel petcocks. Seems you only go so far fixing till you break something. If anyone out there has a damaged petcock I need the little waffer washer that goes between the shut off valve and its trim plate. Mine was weak as it had rusted and it broke right in half.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

                      • Replaced an expensive Metzeler rear tire that wore out pretty fast with a cheap Shinko 712 which I expect will wear out real fast. Sure seems to ride sweet to far. Feels sticky and neutral in cornering. I've seen endurance reports ranging from 2000 miles to 6000. If I get 5000 I'm saving money.

I got almost 10k outta my 712 rear. That was all highway though.

Those tires are real sticky Poprock. They are only about a 4 to 6 thousand mile tire in my experience though.

712's are great on the front and will go maybe 10k up there but I've found the sidewall to be a little too weak for the rear. The seem to have a tendancy to fall over when you go in hot. IMHO

                              • I went in hot once with the Metzeler. Didn't turn out well. I have to respect the roads I ride. Very few curves are not blind and most of them are tight. Critters abound, along with log trucks, tractors pulling manure spreaders, and coastal visitors who don't take center lines seriously. Tends to make one cautious. Any miles over 4000 on the Shinko will be free ones IMO. 10 K would be fantastic. We'll see. Meanwhile it feels real good to me on a few runs to town.
