  • Thanks

Thanks Greg, I thought I remembered seeing somewhere that was the case. Should be pretty easy to see the wiring now that tank is removed. Thanks again.

By the by, the left hand coil fires 1&4, and the right hand fires 2&3, unless someone has switched a few things. CZ

      • Got spark

Well I got out and checked some wiring this afternoon. Found the plug that has the 4 wires for kill switch and start button making intermitten contact. Wiggled it around and got it to crank. Will clean contacts. Pulled the plugs and checked for spark, OK. Checked compression while plugs were out.
125, 115, 135, 125. Don't know how good or bad that is. Gonna pull the carbs next, and go thru them. It still has the octy on it, so that is going to have to be checked. And the petcocks also, while I have the tank off. New gas lines also. Thanks for the help guys.

        • Those compression numbers aren't too bad. I'm still not convinced that you don't have an ignition problem.

Do you still have the stock airbox on there?

I put the front brake calipers back together with new seals and pucks
            ( pads ).
Have a new master cylinder. Tomorrow I will bleed the system and go for a ride. If all goes well Yami will be in operation for the winter, and parked when it snows.

            • Air box

Yes the air box is intact. What are your suspicions on the electrical. The coils are aftermarket accel I believe. I'll have to look a little closer.

              • Accel would be a name I would trust. However, I'm still stuck on the fact that that the 2 cylinders that are misfiring are on the same ignition circuit.

I asked about the airbox because it would be easy to check the carbs if you had pods. If you pull the carbs, remove the airbox also and leave it off for the time being.. That way you can fiddle with the carbs more easily. You have to have the carbs off to remove or replace the airbox but that can be done after you get the problem diagnosed and repaired

I should have checked spark before I messed with any wiring. I pulled apart the common wires going to the coils. One seemed a little loose. I tightened both female fittings and reconnected. The blue wire feeding the #2&3 coil has a cracked insulator on the male fitting. It was tucked down between the frame and coil mounts. I noticed it when I checked to see how tight the fitting was. I was thinking where it was tucked, and the insulator being cracked, that maybe it was shorting to ground, therefore not firing. Hope that makes sense. I left it up while I checked for spark. That way I knew it was not grounding. I can seal that insulation on the wire easily. I believe that is going to be the problem. I'm going to clean the carbs anyway, as she has been setting for at least 7 months now. Probably sat for 3 or 4 months last time, when she wasn't firing on 2&3. I probably should have included that info in the first post, sorry for the omission. Anyway Greg, Thanks for your input, I welcome it, please continue with anything else you might have. I just thought I knew something about these beasts. Learn something new everytime I have to work on it. Thank the Lord for the internet and this forum.

                  • Makes perfect sense Rod. It's stupid little things like that that drive a sane person over the edge.

                    • Sane?

I've been called many things, sane is not one of them! I'm sure hopeing that is it. Chasing wiring on these machines, is quite maddening. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

                      • Not Much

Put some K100 fuel treatment in both tanks, added a little Marvel Mystery oil too. Batteries are being handled by Battery Tender full time. Haven't completely stopped riding for the year yet (I think), but just in case they do sit all by themselves for a while, the fuel systems will be ok.

                          • Carbs

Well I know now why it wasn't running on 2&3. Got the carbs off, and I think every hole that can be plugged is. Got them all disassembled and it is going to take much time and effort to get them clean. MP, that treatment you used, where did you get that? I've heard of the Marvel Mystery Oil, but not that other. I've always just used sta-bil, but from the looks of those carbs, it doesn't help when it evaporates. Anyway I was kinda relieved to see they were that bad, as that will be most if not all the problem it was having.
