  • I went out for a ride in the rain to get a new hard drive. The new one terabyte data drive started ranting in the event log about failing and dying and needing to be replaced so I took the opportunity to buy a new drive. It was also a good way to check the repair job I did to my helmet's face shield and to see how the new fairing lowers handle rain.

The new hard drive is excellent. I got a two terabyte drive for almost the same price I paid two years ago for one terabyte so I'll have three terabytes of storage when I get the bad drive replaced under warranty. I have no idea what I will do with that much space but I just wanted to share.

I fixed the face shield leak. The face shield seal leaked on my new Bell Vortex when I went up north. Long before I finished a thousand miles in the rain with a leaking face shield I was thinking about throwing it off one of the spectacular canyon view points and just buying another helmet that didn't leak.

The fairing lowers worked great! Most of the water was caught by the lowers so it stayed off my leathers and my legs stayed dry! Unfortunately it also streamed that water directly onto my boots and up under the cuff so I need to fix that.

    Needy....

I went for another ride in the rain today which turned into a ride in sunshine and now it's actually getting hot again.

Actually, after working with Larry on the videos I discovered just exactly how stupendously large even a simple, raw, uncompressed video is along with how much space it requires to store and edit. When I get a better camera I believe I'll need all that space plus.

              • put the front end back together

I put the front end back together on my new 79. I got everything lined up and torqued. I rode it around the parking lot a few loops, and it steers better. I am uncomfortable with the stock bars though, my long legs are in the way in low speed turns. Gotta do some adjusting on that or buy new bars. Ive got daytona bars on the mns, maybe I will go that route or maybe a little more rise. Now I have to put insurance on it and put the zuk plate on it for officially making it legal.

                        • Put my handlebars back on the 80Std on sunday, just had themtweeked after it decided to take a rest on its side last week during one of our recent earth tremmors.
It was a wonderfull 28 cel outside so I went for a pootle along the hill tops close to home.
Can home and pulled the carbs off my 79Std , time to give them a clean out ready for a ride next month to another biker rally.
Today I went and collected my spare engine from my lockup, so now I have something to do in the thee weeks holiday at xmass from work....
Will be stripping this engine, fitting new gaskets and having it cleaned , painted and polished ready to put into my 80Std in the new year.

                          • I fitted braided lines to the front of my special. Was going to do the rear but the Canadian supplier gave me a straight line instesd of the 90 degree twist required to fit it. Not impressed. Like the way the front feels, though. Will have to wait till it stops raining to give it a test run. Bit concerned they may work too well and spit me off on a wet road.
Stripped the brake gear off my trailer. I snapped my one off actuating cable last week, and now it looks like it really is a one off. Can't get another anywhere, so I'm gonna go hydraulic all the way with a removable plate holding M/C and pedal with a long line back to the calipers. It'll probably give better feel to the system, too.

                            • Put a new rear tire on, in the rain. Ok, so I was in the garage, and I took the wheel to my local shop to get mounted, but I took it off and back on myself. It's a real PITA getting the rear wheel off with just the center stand when you have the vetter racks on there. The fender is blocked so you can't swing it up to get the tire out easily. I did get it to swing up a little, and it was JUST enough to get the tire back on (went to a 130/90 17 instead of 130/70 17 because it's so hard to find the latter) even with the slightly larger tire. Clearance does seem to be fine, and the center stand still gets the rear tire off the ground, if just barely. An advantage is that I get the affective lean as if I had stayed stock and put a special side stand on, which I had planned to do before this. Yes it's just a little higher, which would be a problem for the inseam challenged, but it's ok for me.

Put on a Bridgestone Spitfire S11 which I at least like the looks of. We'll see how it goes and how it wears, as it was only about $5 more than the Kenda Cruiser it replaced.

                              • Had not run the Venturer for a couple months, so since it was a nice 65+degrees in the man-cave last nite decided to clean it up a bit to ride today on the annual ToyRun. It still had some Caly bugs and such from the June rally stuck on it. Was a very large turn-out with the weather overcast and bout 50degrees. Heard the number of bikes exceeded 800. Was a hoot as I hadn't even been on or started either bike for a couple months.
