What I did....lost my keys.

Actually, I realized today that I previously lost my keys. Luggage key I know I can replace and have the bags re-keyed. Is there a way to find the key code for a 35 year old motorcycle?

Hey gang. After toying with a lot of thoughts (always dangerous), I think I'm going to do a repaint on my 1980 G. Currently a medium metallic Blue, I'm looking to go "semi restore" to a two-tone Macho Maroon and cream color scheme

Today I put the shiny new tag on the XJ's license plate and the new registration went under the seat with the insurance paper.

No more worries about having "The Conversation" in mid-ride because the tags were expired even though the paperwork is valid. Yay!

I'm laughing too - 'cause I bought that same windshield on account of that picture. Way too short, and I got so much buffeting from it that my eyes wouldn't focus. It had to go.

Dunno, and dunno... in that order. Not my bike, just a pic I've been drooling over for years. I like the way it's got the seat foam sculpted too.

The pissing petcocks (part 2)

The petcocks on my bike had to be completely rebuilt...that included removing all the JB weld and silicone inside the petcocks..long story but essentially the idea had been to eliminate the vacuum and create a true "off" position...all of this was done by the previous owner...but when Kurt had the bike and was ready to pull the tank off the "off" position was no longer "off' and gas pissed out onto Kurt and all over his beautiful mancave floor catching him off guard...eventually the petcocks were reworked to reinstate the vacuum nd with a new KL rebuild kits got them rebuilt..Thanks Kurt.
Last week I smell raw gas as I am out riding and upon stopping discover a leak in the left side petcock and gas all over my pants...it looked to be leaking at the fuel ine ...Mark and I tackled this fairly easy replacement of fuel lines...started the bike up and it was still pissing gas out this tiny hole on the petcock body...so Mark says its the diaphragm...take the petcock apart and discover the new KL diapham has a cut in it due to the metal on this part...the edges were way too sharp and hen operating the lever on the petcock...I must have caused it to cut into the rubber and cause it to piss more gas..luckily I had the old parts that Kurt took off and we replaced the new diaphragm with the old one sans silicone..and it is working fine..just a heads up for those buying KL kits to check that metal piece and make sure there are no sharp edges..if there are take a file and round them off...Hopefully this is the last of the pissing petcocks...y'all have a nice day...

Aside from knocking a major honey-do list item off the agenda (flooring replacement ) which took most of the day on Saturday, I managed to find enough time to re-paint and install a Yamaha Sport Fairing on my Ugly Duck. I was so happy with the one on my Mayberry Duck that I found one for this bike.

Although I really enjoyed the Memphis Shade, in my opinion, the Yamaha Sport Fairing is superior in looks and performance. The ability to get a little more body color on the machine also helps, again in my opinion, give the bike a more attractive look.

Inspiration was the Silver original paint from the Ad found under info>ads-brochures>80G Standard and Dresser. I'm putting the cream color in where the lighter gray shows in the ad, using the Maroon in place of the blackish "base" color. Before I do anything un-undoable, Would anyone care to chime in on this idea? Conversation over last weekend led me to re-vamping the original look with the off white/eggshell, then to replacing my current blue with a midnight, and when I talked to the painter, and showed a pic of the old macho maroon, he insisted it was the color to use with the cream. What say you all?

Is there a resource to determine whether my bike was originally configured in ruby red or diamond silver?

What i will be doing Tonight:

Re-installing oil filter housing with new bypass valve (filter housingbolt), installing new clamps on carb side of two intake boots, jacking with exhaust connections and perhaps starting a refinish on headers, and going to the ATV dealer next door for five gallons of isooctane.

Installed air conditioning in my garage so the bikes are happier when I am working on them. Just in time for the winter months.
