Finally installed the new AGM battery that arrived 3 or so weeks ago in the 80SG. Looking forward to a good service life out of it. The battery I received was a Kinetic brand, took about 6 hours @2A to reach full charge, so it was mostly charged as received.
FWIW, the OEM Yuasa AGM in my 2001 ZRX1200 is still in the bike. It is not as strong as a few years ago, but will get me through this winter until spring when I want to replace it with a lighter weight lithium battery. The Japanese made Yuasa batteries of that vintage were very well made, and supposedly it is the "virgin" lead that leads to the long life. New Yuasa batteries bought as replacements are made in the USA using recycled lead, and that is a main reason I have been told they don't last nearly as long.
In case anyone wanted to know...
What did you do to your bike today?

Installing new bags today and found that the rear part of the frame was pushed over about 1/4" by that North Carolina guard rail. Gotta fix that so everything centers up right.
OCD got the best of me.

My XJ's Start interlock relay quit working and the bike wouldn't start. Bummer!
I deleted the Start interlock relay and de-fanged the Sidestand relay but left it operational. The XJ's Atari diagnostic computer will still warn when the sidestand is down but the bike starts and runs like the XS11.
I removed the Start interlock relay, then made a jumper for the two Red/White wires in the harness connector that go to the Ignition/Start circuit. I wrapped the connector and jumper in some of Marty's self-amalgamating F4 tape, then put a heat-shrink sleeve over the whole enchilada and tucked it up into the frame to keep it out of trouble.
While I was making wiring mods I removed the Black/White wire from the harness connector for the Sidestand relay, then wrapped the bare spade terminal in F4 tape. The B/W wire is the same wire used for the Tipover switch. If the transmission is not in Neutral and you put the sidestand down or the switch wears out or one of the wires shorts, the TCI is grounded and kills the engine.Leave a comment:

Pulling my new purchase apart. 1982 XJ1100 with 16K miles on it that sat for a few years. The air box was a pain as always to pull off. Carbs are off and ready to go through. Surprising unmolested bike. I paid $450 for it so I couldn't loose money on it.
I was really looking for a bike to go retro with, but I think I'm just going to restore this one.Leave a comment:

As I've said, I'm going with this look, a little less pink. Tank, sides, and outer fairing were supposed to get refinish this week. They didn't make it.
Painting the bags, too, and maybe a warbonnet style plastic fender if I can scrounge one. The bags and fairing, however, are staying off for the time being. All the windshields I can find are shaped to fit behind a round headlight. If I can't find one with a rectangle cutout, or a round headlight to mount, I'll keep the Venturer fairing, but I'm not in love with it.Leave a comment:

Today I fixed an oil leak that waa left over from my head replacement. Got in a nice after-rain ride. Then got stuck in another storm. Looks like a ride home through the Pennsylvania freezing rain... Oh well, shes running like a champ, so it shouldnt be too bad.Leave a comment:

Fired up Ol' Okie a little bit ago, it's been a couple months. A quite a bit of smoke out of the left side for a while until it warmed/cleared up. Valve seals looks like.
He still runs like a champ though. I think that climb to the top of Pikes Peak last summer may have disagreed with him.
Gonna need a valve job soon.

Thank you for the feedback. I will double check the clutch adjustment before making the modification. Bike is really running strong and is a lot of fun.First the obligatory basic questions, #1; are you certain the clutch is adjusted right at BOTH ends? #2 Are you running the correct oil in the crank case/ clutch?
If you answered both questions yes then the next step is replace the clutch springs and yes, Barnetts are the ONLY way to go there in my opinion.

First the obligatory basic questions, #1; are you certain the clutch is adjusted right at BOTH ends? #2 Are you running the correct oil in the crank case/ clutch?Looks like I finally got the bike to this point which means I am at least riding it. I changed the oil for a second time to get this machine nice a clean inside. It sat for about 5 or 6 years before I restored it. Running better and better. I even had to adjust the idle down so the fuel is flowing well.
Question, is Barnett the way to go or is there a newer clutch fix?

Glad you found them.......now, have an extra made and scotch-loc(Velcro on steroids
) on the bike somewhere(fairing compartment,etc.). Most all of us long time, many decade riders have done exactly that
.

Part way through fairing removal. Moved cordless drill into the shop, realized I left the adaptor thingy necessary to use sockets and accessories with said drill at home.
Oh, as posted in my resto/destro thread, I recovered lost keys a few days ago.
I need lunch.Leave a comment:

Yeah-- Nov. 14 in N. MI seems the right time. I am storing my F an hour from home, so I rode it there this morning. Sorta cool (48*), but a very nice ride, nonetheless. I will winterize it soon, as the weatherman is calling for crud soon. Did not ride enough this season, but I guess everyone says that.

you would need to pull the ignition switch to see of the code sticker is still on it.Leave a comment:

Had some fun
Today I dug out and dusted off the new tires I bought for my '79 Special but haven't used. The XJ needs new shoes so that's where they're going when the wheels come off.
I've tried to avoid third-party programs and stick with the built-in tools that come with Windows 10 but I got a deal on the Nero 2017 ultrasuperdeluxkitchensink edition so of course I had to try out the Video Tool and see if it worked.
It worked.
