xs11???????
Ok, I am a new member. I started researching different bikes recently with sole intentions of modifying into a bobber style. Boy I hope that doesn't upset you guys that I am wanting to do this with an xs11. ha. In my hunt I found many people doing many different things with many different kinds of bikes. The bike that I found to be most adaptable for these mods is the xs650 and not the xs1100. Why is that?? I have heard equally good things about the xs650 as the 11 but no one seems to be making these mods on the 11's. I have my eyes and heart on the 11's not to sacrafice the power. I have ridden many bikes of the 650 size and have owned 1100's or beter. Just cant see doing it. Can anyone give me a reason for going with the 650 instead of the 11? I am in total amazement of the strong, loyal following that these bikes have. What I like about what I have found out of them is so possitive on the dependable side. And seem to be very simple to work on verses many other setups and desings of other bikes. I really look forward to hearing back from som of you on this topic.

Welcome

Welcome to the club! This is about the greatest bunch of humanity I've ever run across so you're in good company here. As you can see from my handle, I'm into 650s too.

About the XS11... It is about as bulletproof a bike as was ever made. The torque curve is flat which eliminates a lot of shifting. About the only disadvantage I find is that the 11 is really heavy and a little piggy for handling compared to a sick-fitty. Still I ride mine every day! I replaced the rear shocks with longer ones which really quickens up the steering (less rake and trail). This is not everyone's cup of tea, most lower their bikes. This will make the steering slower but to each his (or her) own.

I was just out on Hwy. 29 (2 lane blacktop) and in one of those spots where everyone was afraid to pass. Passed the whole line of about 7 cars with room to spare and without downshifting...hee hee!
Shiny side up,
650 Mike

XS1100SF "Rusty", runs great, 96k miles
XS650SJ "The Black Bike", engine from XS650H with 750cc big bore kit, 30k miles

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in one pretty and well preserved piece, but to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, worn out and defiantly shouting, "WOW, what a ride !" - Sprung

I think a lot of it has to do with back in the 60s & 70s the bobber bike to have "to be cool" was the bonneville 650. It was the english thing, don't ya know. At least from what I remember....

I've seen some really nice XS11 bobbers on this site and others. And they are totally way cool!

Only thing that upsets me is when some one tries to chop a bike, restore a hotrod or gets a new ferrari, lambo etc, and it ends up sitting in the garage while the tires rot and it never kills a single bug.

If it has wheels, it needs to be driven. hard.

Are you talking about me? Someone tried to chop my bike (PO), got a 67 Firebird awaiting restoration (hotrod), and since we are paying off the house in 3 years total (only 18 months left!) we are going to save about $250,000 in interest, I was thinking that I could buy a used RUF CTR2!

I went to do some work at an expensive apartment building in Dallas, penthouse apartments were $8,000 a month , I was walking through the parking garage and saw a 1995 Ferrari Testarossa sitting there with flat tires, years of dust and tags and insp from 1995. Looked like brand new inside. Asked security about it and they said, " One of the renters bought it new with cash, site unseen and had it delivered to the building. That's when he found out it was a standard trans and didn't know how to drive it, so he let it sit. He only lives here a couple months out of the year." I told the security guard to tell him that I would give him $100 for it! This was about 5 years ago. When I went back the next year it was still there, but the third year I went back it was gone.

I didn't think testarosas had auto transmissions. I could be wrong, I haven't owned many.

If he can afford to pay that kind of cash you'd figure you could afford to pay someone to teach you to drive it.Or at least drive you around in it.

I don't think any Ferrari's came with automatic transmissions, after all they are modeled after race cars! Plus I would imagine you could probably shift it with your little finger.

Most Ferrari's have manual transmissions, but NOT all. Most of the "bigger" four seat models CAN be had with an automatic. I've actually seen one with my own eyes!!
But I do agree with Tarzan, If you liked the looks so well you bought one, you DO have the money for lessons!!
