Extinguishing Liberty’s Light and Independent Views--Thinking for yourself is now a crime
Center for Constitutional Rights has created an excellent fact sheet about this Act, available online here. See also Bruce Fein's 12/27/07editorial in the Washington Post, Police in thought pursuit.

    — Ed.

    By Paul Craig Roberts

01/04/08 "ICH " -- -- What was the greatest failure of 2007? President Bush’s “surge” in Iraq? The decline in the value of the US dollar? Subprime mortgages? No. The greatest failure of 2007 was the newly sworn in Democratic Congress.

The American people’s attempt in November 2006 to rein in a rogue government, which has committed the US to costly military adventures while running roughshod over the US Constitution, failed. Replacing Republicans with Democrats in the House and Senate has made no difference.

The assault on the US Constitution by the Democratic Party is as determined as the assault by the Republicans. On October 23, 2007, the House passed a bill sponsored by California Democratic congresswoman Jane Harman, chairwoman of a Homeland Security subcommittee, that overturns the constitutionally guaranteed rights to free expression, association, and assembly.

The bill passed the House on a vote of 404-6. In the Senate the bill is sponsored by Maine Republican Susan Collins and apparently faces no meaningful opposition.

Harman’s bill is called the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act. When HR 1955 becomes law, it will create a commission tasked with identifying extremist people, groups, and ideas. The commission will hold hearings around the country, taking testimony and compiling a list of dangerous people and beliefs. The bill will, in short, create massive terrorism in the United States. But the perpetrators of terrorism will not be Muslim terrorists; they will be government agents and fellow citizens.

We are beginning to see who will be the inmates of the detention centers being built in the US by Halliburton under government contract.

Who will be on the “extremist beliefs” list? The answer is: civil libertarians, critics of Israel, 9/11 skeptics, critics of the administration’s wars and foreign policies, critics of the administration’s use of kidnapping, rendition, torture and violation of the Geneva Conventions, and critics of the administration’s spying on Americans. Anyone in the way of a powerful interest group--such as environmentalists opposing politically connected developers--is also a candidate for the list.

The “Extremist Beliefs Commission” is the mechanism for identifying Americans who pose “a threat to domestic security” and a threat of “homegrown terrorism” that “cannot be easily prevented through traditional federal intelligence or law enforcement efforts.”

This bill is a boon for nasty people. That SOB who stole your girlfriend, that hussy who stole your boyfriend, the gun owner next door--just report them to Homeland Security as holders of extreme beliefs. Homeland Security needs suspects, so they are not going to check. Under the new regime, accusation is evidence. Moreover, “our” elected representatives will never admit that they voted for a bill and created an “Extremist Belief Commission” for which there is neither need nor constitutional basis.

That boss who harasses you for coming late to work--he’s a good candidate to be reported; so is that minority employee that you can’t fire for any normal reason. So is the husband of that good-looking woman you have been unable to seduce. Every kind of quarrel and jealousy can now be settled with a phone call to Homeland Security.

Soon Halliburton will be building more detention centers.

Americans are so far removed from the roots of their liberty that they just don’t get it. Most Americans don’t know what habeas corpus is or why it is important to them. But they know what they want, and Jane Harman has given them a new way to settle scores and to advance their own interests.

Even educated liberals believe that the US Constitution is a “living document” that can be changed to mean whatever it needs to mean in order to accommodate some new important cause, such as abortion and legal privileges for minorities and the handicapped. Today it is the “war on terror” that the Constitution must accommodate. Tomorrow it can be the war on whomever or whatever.

Think about it. More than six years ago the World Trade Center and Pentagon were attacked. The US government blamed it on al Qaeda. Scant evidence has been presented. The 9/11 Commission Report has been subjected to devastating criticism by a large number of qualified people--including the commission’s chairman and co-chairman.

Since 9/11 there have been no terrorist attacks in the US. The FBI has tried to orchestrate a few, but the “terrorist plots” never got beyond talk organized and led by FBI agents. There are no visible extremist groups other than the neoconservatives that control the government in Washington. But somehow the House of Representatives overwhelmingly sees a need to create a commission to take testimony and search out extremist views (outside of Washington, of course).

This search for extremist views comes after President Bush and the Justice (sic) Department declare that the President can ignore habeas corpus, ignore the Geneva Conventions, seize people without evidence, hold them indefinitely without presenting charges, torture them until they confess to some made up crime, and take over the government by declaring an emergency. Of course, none of these “patriotic” views are extremist.

The search for extremist views follows also the granting of contracts to Halliburton to build detention centers in the US. No member of Congress or the executive branch ever explained the need for the detention centers or who the detainees would be. Of course, there is nothing extremist about building detention centers in the US for undisclosed inmates.

Clearly the detention centers are not meant to just stand there empty. Thanks to 2007’s greatest failure--the Democratic Congress--there is to be an “Extremist Beliefs Commission” to secure inmates for Bush’s detention centers.

President Bush promises us that the wars he has launched will cause the “untamed fire of freedom” to “reach the darkest corners of our world.” Meanwhile in America the fire of freedom has not only been tamed but also is being extinguished.

The light of liberty has gone out in the United States.

      Nice discussion.
      I agree, that's why I said:
"These extremists did not materialize overnight, and they won't go away overnight. Even if we begin to do everything right, we'll be dealing with an angered Muslim world for a long time. Ron Paul has no illusions about any of that."

...and gave a reading list with Ron Paul's ideas.

Ron Paul is only agreeing with the CIA and all the reports/studies I've ever heard of. Not to mention Thomas Jefferson (you know he had to contend with Islamic terrorists, too, right?), Reagan, Goldwater, Taft, need I go on? If all those people are "wack" too, I'd say Ron Paul is in good company.

      Think about it logically:

      Problem: Islamic terrorists/extremists

Proposed solution: Pre-emptive, long term war and occupation of random Islamic nations.

Outcome so far: More American bloodshed. Increased extremism and hatred for America. Increased tension and unrest in the area. More deficit spending, borrowing, and printing of dollars to pay for it all. Increased vulnerability of America's borders while our border patrol minds and manpower are in Iraq, securing their borders.

I've seen nothing to indicate we are better off or safer in any way because of all this. To the contrary, every indication is that we are less safe. Why do we keep believing more of the same will some how "fix" something? Must be an emotional thing, as prom said, 'cause it sure ain't logical.

For me, it was an education issue. I believed what I was told because I didn't know any better. When I began to learn more, my opinion changed.

          • In Michigan last night several reports/complaints from people stating that when they inserted their card into the Diebold machine it spit them back out saying an invalid vote.

All these votes just happened to be for Ron Paul.

Diebold Machine Rejects Ron Paul Votes In Michigan

Voter #1 Genoa Township, Michigan Precinct 3. Voting problems?

            First observation…
            -Diebold

I was the first voter, I circled in Ron Paul and put my ballot into the machine. Spit it right back out and said INVALID BALLOT.

Second guy gives it a shot. INVALID BALLOT.

I begin arguing with the lady running the precinct about computer voting and people voting. This lady actually says in a room full of people that Computers are better at counting ballots than people, cause people make mistakes. who makes computers?

So to finish it up, she calls the township. she says I can keep my ballot in a secret compartment and they will put it through later once its fixed.

So they call her back. She gets off the phone. She says the manufacturer says there is a problem with a memory card. Someone from the manufacturer will be there with a new memory card soon.

It doesn't’t help that I just watched a darn documentary about DIEBOLD and MEMORY CARDS.

I immediately left and drive to the township office to voice my complaints. They must still be sleeping.

I think that fraud from using the Diebold machines is complete nonsense. The problems with voting have always been with the handcounting low-tech methods we use now.

I think modern voting machines are more likely to be fraud-free and much more likely to get more people to vote.

I don't see why we can't vote online. Banks protect their money pretty well, we can do the same with the vote.

I am also impressed by the way Ron Paul moved on from that hit piece on racism. He is an excellent conservative candidate ... it would be nice to see the Mitt and McCain show derailed. It won't be because of me though, I'm a Clinton fan.

I also clearly have a little too much time on my hands this lunch-hour!!!!

                • There are some very interesting and valid points being discussed here..which i usually do not get involved in...however since this thread revolves around Ron Paul...it seems to me that he will not be a major player in this process...I have been watching Lou Dobbs on CNN for about 1 year now...at first I was not sure where he and CNN were coming from..the Left?..the Right? As time has moved forward in has become clear that he is an Independant Populist...many ppl in this country are completely fed up with both the Dems' and the Repubs'.It might just be the right time for the Independant Populist..I for one have re-registered as an Independant...The only way "We The People"can take this country back is to organize behind and Independant Populist Party. So if enough people registered Independant then perhaps we could THROW ALL THE F@#$%^&
BUMS OUT! But just voting for another Republican or Democratic candidate will not suffic e for me personally and unless there is an Independant cadidate running ...I am likely not to be voting for any of the above....after all you should ask yourself this question...Do I really believe the politicians will do as they say?And..Do I really believe the politicians are out there for our best interests..or theirs???

Ron Paul will do what he says. Look at his record. He's a statesman, not a politician. Don't take my word for it, look it up!

If he were "just another Republican" I wouldn't be voting for him either. He ran as a Libertarian in '88 and that's where his philosophy centers. The Republican platform and heritage isn't so bad, it's this current crop of no-good "neocons" who've taken over.

I'm a Ron Paul Republican or no Republican at all.

I am finding it very interesting at this point in the election year that no one candiate in either political party has a majority...the dems are split 3 ways and the Reps at least 2 ways..what I see is many ppl not happy with any of them...the year is still young...

                          • The bottom line is Dr. Paul's candidacy is a pipe dream. No matter how much I may agree with him he will not even come close to being elected President for a variety of reasons that are far beyond the scope of this silly little forum.

Which leaves us with the age old problem of voting for the lesser of two evils. You might as well accept it. I don't like it any more than you.

I hate to be so cynical but the good 'ol US of A has just about come to it's end. We have gone the route that all other democracies have before us. We have voted ourselves into oblivion. This is exactly what the Founding Fathers tried to avert by framing a "Republic"...a representative democracy...in the hopes that the Dumb Masses (dumb asses) wouldn't be able to vote themselves into extinction.

However for the last 60 years or so the American people have been duped into actually believing our nation is a pure democracy and that majority rule (MOB RULE) is the way to go. As such we ...the USA...are TOAST.

If you are any scholar of the Constitution and our history you know damned well that the general population was never intended to vote for the President. As a matter of fact the original setup was that the citizens wouldn't even vote for their respective senators. The were to be appointed by the State legislators. This way the government of each "STATE" had representation in Washington via Senators. The people of said state would have representation via the House of Representatives. Of course that all got changed and now your Senator is elected just like a congressman so he is exposed to all sorts of corruption from the election process that was never intended.

There is a reason people do not understand our form of government. There is a reason people are clueless regarding the Constitution. It's called government schools...public education. BLAH!

Having said all that....the only thing I can do is try to mitigate damages. Our system is doomed to failure because of our idiotic "mob rule" approach. My best hope is to out run the impending doom if possible.

Finally....Mr. Paul is certainly a strict constitutionalist. And for that I am totally impressed with him. But the one thing he is completely missing the boat on is our enemies abroad. Abraham Lincoln once said if we ever fall it will be from within. The mentality of political correctness and accepting ALL cultures as equal is not only insane but could very well be our unraveling.

Here's some fat to chew on. This is what we are up against people. These people want to inavde us and topple us from within. These guys don't want Play Nice. They want you to be their BITCHES:

                            http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/

First, you start out by presenting a well thought out arguement; factual and well researched, as is your usual way.
A way that I have often appreciated in the past... clear concise... with a certain drive to it, but one grounded in a firm grip of reality.
And then, you had to blow it for me by linking to some cartoonish site designed to cater to the lowest common denominator of the emotionally gullible and easily driven.
(Yes, I did laugh at some of the articles on that site, but only because I found their arguements so easy to pick apart and defeat.)
I welcome and look forward to reading more from you... as long as it's written in your usual well thought out manner, based upon solid fact, good research, and the wealth of esoteric knowlege that you possess.
