I am the third owner of my '79 Special. For some wierd reason the previous owners didn't fully appreciate what they had and didn't take care of it. It has a lot of rust that I have covered over with paint, (like the spagetti pipes and turnout mufflers,) and the engine has aluminium grunge. All of which I hope to take care of soon. It has 90,000+ miles (28,000 when I bought it!) runs like hell and dosn't burn a drop of oil. Speck? Mu-ah-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!

Old bikers never die, they're just out of sight!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
    I've been riding since 1959.

Mine is spec, and runs great, looks pretty good, other than a crack in the seat.

                XS11SG,
runs good, looks like crap, steering modified for sidecar work, big ol' orange sidecar, tank & sidecovers (lh stock, rh from a '79) painted to match, recovered seat that fits but not original.
A major reason for XS11 scarcity is folks putting the engines into some kinda bargain-class racecar.

The list of things that need fixing on my bike just keeps getting longer. The cracked left baffle is now a major fracture. All three rotors need machining if not replacing. I've got a couple of oil leaks in the engine. The middle drive oil level was low this weekend so I'm worried that the internal seal is leaking.

Oh and the seat's developed a tear that's slowly getting bigger.

Not sure if I'll be able to keep up with what time is doing to the bike.

                        Unmolested but Rusty

Well my bike's completely stock except for missing seat grab bar and the seat cover's been replaced. Needs replacing again. Pipes are really rusty and various areas have pits. Runs perf. Just changed over from stock pullbacks to cafe bars and I'm lovin' it. Don't have pics with the new bars yet.
                        Shiny side up,

Mine is in great shape for a '78. Aftermarket mufflers, otherwise stock at this time. I just started fixin her up. 2 small dents in the tank to repair and new paint. I have seen a lot of bikes just a few years old that don't look as good!

Well, the Dragon ain't quite spec for sure but she is close to mint. Got a couple of scratchs and tiny chips in the paint and some other very minor things. Still in all, she is my baby, I don't care what anyone else thinks she is worth!

If there are more than three bolts holding it on there, it is most likely a very important part!
