I knew I would find it! At last....a pic of my 1980 Special from 1984 in Lewisville, Tx. Only paid $1500 for it back then and it flew! It was the inspiration for the 78 I have now.

After finding the picture of my old bike, I decided to ditch the green color on the 78. It's not the original macho maroon but it'll do. I also went back to the original blinkers and mirrors. I might even do the gold pin stripe eventually.

Judging by the gold wheels, gold finish on the stock airbox, and black lower fork tubes I'd guess this is a MNS, so probably no on the original exhaust system. However it does look like a really good stock special system.

Edit: just noticed the original didn't have black fork tubes, but it looks like it always had the gold wheels. Not so sure now.

Remember, it's one of the European models, which don't match up completely. Notice the square gauges and such. I thing that is the sport model, which combines features of the special and standard along with some MNS styling to go with it.

Edit: Actually looking at it, it's been modified over the years. So it appears to be a really nice frankenbike at this point.

                          Frankenbike??

                          Here's some answers for everyone.
Mathh. Yes they're the original system from new though the header pipes are showing their age now with a fair bit of pitting in the chrome but I'm still really impressed how they've stood the test of time(and use)
As for it's specification, it's a 3H3 which I purchased in 2001 which was in really great condition with only 18,700-odd Kilometers on it. Where had it been hiding all its life?? Dunno, but it had led a very sheltered life indeed. The only blemishes on the whole thing was some rust inside the lips of the mufflers which must've formed while the bike was sitting on its sidestand judging by the angle that it's sited.
I thought that it was all stock (pre internet/ch11) but have subsequently found that it was fitted with the seat, 8" headlight, fairing and three piece bars off an RH and not as original as it seemed.
The square instruments are currently on there due to a wiring harness change with my spare E model to rectify the PO's butcher job in the headlight shell, which I still haven't been able to fathom why, on a bike that looked so pristine?? The original round gauges (pic #1) will be going back on as soon as I get a connector kit for them as I think they suit the theme of the bike better. The wheels were originally both gold, but I had a play with switching to the 17 incher off my E to see what difference it made to economy etc.
Not much, so it'll be back to the 16 incher once I wear this tyre out.
The airbox is actually chrome. I think it's just a reflection of the house colour in it. The fuel tank also has been swapped back and forth between the original and the 24 litre standard tank for better touring ability. The front forks were swapped over due to issue arising from the local Yamaha dealers refusing to acknowledge the existence of a "Special XS1100" and supplying me with the only fork seals they have listed. The wrong ones! So they've been temporarily swapped over till my US sourced seals get here.
Here's a couple more shots for comparison's sake
                          Loaded up, early days.

Showing off at the Laverda Concourse 2010

Fully dressed, hard luggage system with load now on the trailer, not on the bike. Much better

Needed a wing to keep 'er on the ground!

                            Not so much a Frankenbike

Finally, got the old girl back nearly as it was when I bought her. Sourced a non rusty pair of fork tubes from another Aussie Excessive, got my seals from the US. New set of brembo pads from Germany (Thank God for Ebay!)
Standard's front end did the job for me, but were pretty harsh over the potholes & rough stuff compared to the Specials.

                            Today at 277,000 klms

Next up will be getting the round gauges back on. Square ones are a very tight fit in the RH/ Sport Fairing!

                            I'll keep you posted.
