        • Project so far

          Hi folks

Just thought I'd share pics of my Rat-bike project as it stands.

Excuse the steel angle brackets, they are part of my jig from when I straightened the frame.

The adjustable linkage is so I can adjust the loading on the shock, then I'll fine tune with the (Fazer 1000) shocks' own preload.

The engine is in now so I can start welding on brackets I will need for things like the rear master cylinder, and new battery tray, seat. Then work out rearset footrest positions for the new aliminium brackets.

Once all the fab work is done I can strip it all again to clean all welds and remove all the old unwanted frame lugs and subframe remnants.

Just in case any of you think mods like this are a crime against XS's, can I just say that this frame was wrecked front and back end in a head on with a bus.

          • Hey Tom,
That rear shock set up looks exactly like the set up on my 1996 Specialized Gound-Control mountain bike!(maybe a little bigger)

            All my 2-wheelers are old!

            • Tom,
the bike is looking good. is that the stock XS swingarm modified for the monoshock?

              Comment

              • Jimbo, my XS's are my newest bikes I have a 1962 Honda and a '66 Triumph. All my bikes are old as well

Brian, Yeah its a stock swing arm with a horse-shoe tube bolted in at the original shock mounts, coz its bolted in I can use the bolts as a pivot with the adjustable link to increase or decrease load on the shock. At the moment with the engine in it feels a little soft so I will be extending the link to lower the amount of load on the shock.

I'm trying to make it as simple as I can. Simple = trouble free....hopefully, and if its successful folks can copy it easily...........................if they're mad enough to want to

                  • adjustable link

same design as the venerable 3 pt hitch.

so the left-side of the shoe is bolted to the final drive? what shock are you using? and how much travel will you have? can you post a pic of the top shock mount?

really need to get on the UK site more often.

                    • Hey folks, just a note to remind you that the calendar project isn't dead. There have been lotsa nice bike pics posted here, and all of them are potential candidates!
                      Send photos to XS11photos@sbcglobal.net
If you aren't Internet savvy, or have a hard copy photo and don't want to bother scanning etc., you can send me the hard copy and I'll deal with it. Send me an email at the above email address and I will deal with it.
But please don’t wait until September or November to submit. I’d really like to see some photo’s sooner rather than later.
I’m getting a lot of great ideas for modifying my ’79 Special from this thread. Thanks Hobbyman!

Old bikers never die, they're just out of sight!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
                      I've been riding since 1959.

Yep! the U tube (horse shoe) has eyes welded onto the ends and is bolted on the original shock mounts/stud on the drive side. The only part welded to the swingarm is a small bracket welded onto the pivot end for the adjustable link.

Its a Fazer1000 shock, I'm told its the same as the early R1 shock.

Travel is slightly more than standard XS (1/2" - 3/4" ish) due to the ratio of the leverages exerted on the shock.

Brian I'll take and send you some more pics of the top mounting when I get a few minutes, in a PM on the UK site, look in a day or two. I'm pretty sure the rest of the US lads want that much detail pics on here.

More Bubba Zanetti or Toecutters Kwak from Mad Max sort of style

I 'spose its gonna be a 70-80's streetfighter
