        It's a lake full of sodium salts a.k.a. a 'soda lake'. They usually smell incredibly bad and are usually filled with and surrounded by an equally appealing assortment of oozes with a wide variety of ingredients, textures, colors, and critters.

        A lot of them are full of all the fertilizers and pesticides used on the farms and from the acres of cow patties on the ranches that drain to the southern end of the central valley but I think Garth is specifically talking about this one with its natural natrium:-
        Soda Lake

        It's more or less on the way to Santa Margarita Lake and it'd be a nice detour.

              Old bikers never die, they're just out of sight!

              My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"

                    On Saturday we do a group (or more likely, "groups") ride. We head out for a while, stop somewhere easy for lunch, and take the scenic route home. No Bataan Death Rides, just some ups and downs and turns along the coast or in the foothills. I think that we'll do a southern loop, Santa Maria and parts south. It's hard to resist the Big Sur/Hiway 1 loop, though.

                    I'm thinking that going in pairs of pairs would be better than trying to do fifteen bikes. Our group always devolves into smaller groups after a couple of traffic signals regardless of our intentions. But we can decide who/when/where when we all get there.

                    I will BBQ burgers on Friday, French toast and sausage on Saturday then Tri-tip Saturday night, then Breakfast again on Sunday. I'll bring sodas and some beer, and will provide cooler space for any beer donations. I'll have coffee and tea as well. I'm sure someone will pass the hat to help with food costs, and my Suburban can be used for beer runs as needed. We should also sample some of the local wineries, as there are some of the best in the world around there.

                    I will trailer down with the provisions and camp supplies and get there late afternoon on Friday. I'll bring along some folding chairs and and have a couple of tents which can be borrowed, if you let me know you need one.

                    Oh, and my own trash can....

                          Got word last Friday my new Russell Day-Long for the Connie is done and will be shipping to me this week. Hope to have a few break-in miles on it before June, but a long trip should really tell me if it was worth the price.

                          Sorry about not showing up on the XJ, but SWMBO would not let me keep both bikes fully licensed and insured so I had to make a choice. At least she let me keep the bike...was making noises about selling it until I put my foot down. So, it sits (covered) in the corner of my garage with the battery out, waiting for me to do the right thing and put it back on the road. I fire it up once in a while and take it for a spin on some back roads near my place. Have not been caught yet.

                            Day Long Saddles

                            Jerry,

                            There is no break-in. When we bought them for SWMBO's XS650 and my XS750, SWMBO was the lucky one and got to ride hers home. All she'd say on the way home was, " You're gonna love your new seat." And when it finally arrived, I did. Ditto with the one on my XS11. When you get it, you'll be good to go.

                            Ralph

                              Russell Day LOng................bettin' you would'nt make that run again without it......lest that stock "showroom" seat had you fairly stiff at times as did my Corbin on the ST on occassion. With the Russell you should be able to comfortablely run out a 300mile tank of fuel, or at least 200+ with the trailer.

                                Yep, it's true, I got knocked off my scoot down in Monterey. I guess I was being prescient when I wrote that. A middle aged yuppie cage jockey, (in a Prius no less.) 2 lane 1 way street, me in left lane, about to pass Prius jockey who had slowed in right lane. Just as I was passing he whips to the left, attempting a left turn from the right lane. Fortunately my one month of martial arts training when I was a teen taught me how to fall down without getting injured, so I came out of it with some very minor asphalt rash on my knee and a sore right hand.

                                Damage to bike:
                                Broken windshield;
                                clutch lever and related do-hicky that it and the mirror screws into (destroyed
                                right front turn signal (broken but working
                                headlight mounts (bent
                                case protector seriously bent on right side;
                                right hand case scarred but in tact;
                                both rear turn signals damaged but still working (my buddy Ray had just turned me on to them the week before- they were shiny new from one of his parts bikes.)
                                I am shooting for getting, at the very least, a new wind shield and clutch lever assembly by Sunday. The rest can, if necessary, wait until later.
                                I'll keep you posted Scot: the real biggie is the clutch lever assembly!
