Thanks. Russ came to the rescue and we got the bike on a trailer and back to his garage. Turns out it was the pickup coil wires after all. At first glance they looked ok as a previous fix had been done. Wiggled them around a little bit and the bike fired up. After we started looking at the "fix" closer, some idiot had just twisted the wires together and then covered them with heat shrink. I have seen other evidence on this bike that the P.O. really should not touch anything electrical.Harry

okay... well...
looks like while the work on the bikes isn't going to be terribly time consuming... there are quite a few things that need to be done... So the earlier people can get here on Friday, the better...
For those doing the valves... a good friend sent me part of his shim library... so hopefully, we will have all the correct sizes... but it's going to be first come first served... There is a local shop that will exchange shims for us for little cost though... and I'll try to talk to him again in the next few days to see if he'll give us more of a break and do it at no cost just for this occasion...
The neighbors are planning to start their part of this deal around 6:00... These things usually last all evening so no big deal about being here right at that time...
The general idea is to have all of the work done by Saturday morning so we can ride... but if anyone HAS to have work done... John said he would stick around to help with that while the rest of us head out... I'd really rather have him ride with us... soooooo... please get here as early as possible on Friday...
The plan so far is to get the work done Friday... meet up Saturday morning and ride... come back here and hang out... grill some assorted meats... then head to the car show sometime Saturday evening...
Nothing is in stone...
Suggestions are welcome...
looking forward to seeing everyone!81 SH Something Special

Oil changes anyone?
Hey all... if anyone wants to change their oil while you're here (or the oil in your bike) and you need a filter... let us know ASAP... John can have the local shop order Fram filters (with the o-rings) for around $8 - $9 a piece...81 SH Something Special

I was told that Fram quit making that filter. Has that guy tried ordering any recently? None of my local auto stores can get them any more...

I may be in need of doing 1st gear on the midnight special while we are down there. I got to thinking about it. It has been jumping for awhile and I usually just short shift into second. But... If I do the final drive swap as planned, that will make it not as easy to do. So, if we are there around noon, with all of the other work that is going on, would we have time to do the gear fix, and the final drive swap, and check my valves, and colortune. I really don't want to take up everyone elses wrenching time with my bike. It just seems I might be asking a little much. I have experience with the gear fix, (just didn't get it backcut well enough last time).Harry

There should be time...
Tod's bike isn't coming apart this time... that we know of... yet...
We should have plenty of able bodied wrenches (and the people to use them) to get you taken care of... AND... if it isn't back together... guess you're either stuck with us for awhile... or you could ride b**** back to KC with Bob... and I'll have me a nice Midnight...

Also, Harry, if you've already done some grinding on the gears, there's probably not going to be a lot to work with, and you'll likely need another set. I'd have another set handy before I did that... but that's just my opinion.
