Osmosis;
Here's a better diagram, just didn't have access to my ftp server last night. Here you go:
Here's a link to it. Right click and "save target as" to download it.

not working just yet... TCI is still in the mail. I didnt even get a single piece of mail today... not even a sales circular or re-finance offer. It's a conspiracy by the USPS to keep me off my XS...
So the "root cause" of the wire switch was likely excessive alchohol consumption while trying to complete a technical task.
While deciding where to make the splice in the pick-up coil wires, I chose to replace the entire wire from 10mm from the pickup coils to the larger diameter wire crimped union.
Without assessing the situation thoughly first (or reading the site tips), I cut the front coil wires in the middle of the flexible section, and removed it from the distributor. I had 2 wire colors of voltmeter lead wire, black and clear. I soldered a 12" black wire lead to the blue wire lead from the PU coil and soldered the 12" clear lead to the orange lead from the PU. I then heat shrunk ~ 6" long tubing over each wire from the edge of the coil, over the splice, and down the wire. Then a larger diameter 6" tubing over both wires together, overlapping onto the coil a bit for support. (later found out this was not a good idea for the rear coil due to the immediate 180 degree foldover) Did the same for the other coil, but put clear to grey wire.
On the other side I traced the wire back to the crimped unions, not realizing the silicon sleeve stops ~ 3" past there and trying to preserve the silicone I pushed and rolled it up behind the shifter as much as I could. (didnt want to ruin it) The crimps were barely visible, but enough to snip/strip (same tool), as soon as they were cut they withdrew into sleeve, I tried to use memory, and look at the wires sheaths in the strippers, and try to remember which was which. (Alchohol + frustration= bad decisions) I convinced myself it was a magnet circuit "pulse closed" and did't have a specific direction. I am pretty sure this is the point where I blindly soldered the wires backward for at least one coil. I did the same heat shrink job on this end. (now it was too late to verify wire color because the entir wire was heatshrunk... twice)
Mistakes I made:
1. not verifing proper wire connections
in the end, the silicone sleeve had to be cut off, It would not go back over the shrink tubing. I should have cut it and verified in the first place.
2. The excessive heat shrink tubing was too long and too stiff, it impeded with the function of the vaccumn advance. (had to cut enough away to allow flexible points) I did leave it in the crimp points though.
Switching the wires in the top row of the 4 wire plug seems to make it start quicker, without the wire switch, it seemed to fire out of sequence. I have a fair amount of confidence that I only switched a single pair of wires, and not across/between wiring across the pairs. It's hard to tell on two cylinders, it doesnt run to hot anyways... That is why I was asking which wire was positive and negative on the PU coils. ( I assumed that since both have a blue wire it is ground)Last edited by osmosis4b; 04-26-2006, 11:25 PM.79' XS1100SF "Eleven Special" - Black/Gold

SHE'S ALIVE!!!!
Moto's the hero of the day!!! Your donor "organ" fit into my failing bike and solved the problem. She run's like the day I got her again! After a 40 mile ride on in the Napa Valley hills (around Lake Berryessa), she blew out all cobwebs. She purred like a kitten at 80mph back down I-505 .
After a gas refill (@ 3.28/gal) rode her back to work to finish the day. (I cut out early in anticipation of the TCI being in the mail, but gotta finish work now the sun is down) I gotta cut this post short, so I can get this bacteria grown and get out of here and back on the bike. I plan on burning a tank up again running up and down 505 tonight. It seems like it has a slight hesitation still, but it might be the heat shink on the PU's (mentioned earlier), or the plugs fouled from running on two. I got new plugs, will change before tonights ride. After a long ride, I will be able to tell better. Will post tonight after ride...
MOTO... thanks again man, I will be sending your shipping charges back, strapped to a twelve pack of your favorite brew... let me know your preferred poison!79' XS1100SF "Eleven Special" - Black/Gold

Thanks everyone for all of the troubleshooting help!!
Thanks Again Brant for the TCI!! I will strap your shipping fee to a bottle of irish creme and drop it in the mail this W/E. Have a good ride to Salttown this weekend.
Knewsome- you are just around the corner, we need to run into each other when you get her running! I have been following your bikes progress, (I thought I was ambitious, but you got me beat).
Randy, I will send this broken TCI out to you this W/E too.
Last nights ride report...
So, there wasnt a miss after all, just needed ridden a bit. Plugs helped. I did have to walk down the side of 505 for about 8 miles though... I did a little bit o' dumbass move last night. Apparently, the fuel light doesnt work now, (it worked before I took the tank off), and I didnt switch the petcock back to run after a fillup, left it in reserve, and ran her dry! If anyone out there is familiar with 505, there is NOTHING on 505 north of Winters but straight dark highway. No phones, no gas stations, no traffic... Luckily the girlfriend is understanding, and got out of bed and took a drive to bring me fuel. By the time I got home, I didnt have the energy to post.
This AM, when I woke up there was a gas puddle under the bike. Initial troubleshooting indicates that cylinder 1's carb float is not stopping fuel, and flowing back into the air box, dripping out of the drainhole and over the gearbox to the ground. Why would this have just started, did I mistakenly but the 2 hoses back on the that petcock wrong (backwards)? any insight?79' XS1100SF "Eleven Special" - Black/Gold

Hey Os,
We should TOTALLY get together for a ride once the baboon gets back together. I need one to blow out the cobwebs from the bike, and the steam from my head!
Anyhow, time to call fedex and gripe at them some more.

Osmo,
Running the tank dry could have stirred up a bunch of gunk, rust, and may have gotten down into your carbs, since the reserve pipes are lower than the regular lines, so the rust and gunk can build up in the bottom of the tank, but you mostly use the regular lines, so the gunk just builds up. Then, when you finally selected RESERVE, then the gunk was able to flow thru the lower positioned pipes, and past the petcock filter towers and down into your carbs, probably sticking in between your float needle valve and seat, allowing the fuel to keep flowing. You'll need to check your oil for the presence of fuel, and change it if there is fuel in it!
Your light didn't work, because you may have forgotten to plug in the tank sender wires back together when you put the tank back on!?

forgot to mention I boroscoped the tank when I had it at work during he acid/base soak. Honeslty, I think the tank is as clean as the day it was made! it has dull metal colored, no signs of contamination. (hat does not mean that there isn't crap pluggiing up my float valve, but the tank is clean. could be dog hair, i have 3 large ones, and there hair is in everyhing else around here.
No gas in the oil, but still leaking, should i tear into a carb, or is there an easier fix idea.
Right now I am jus shutting the gas off a minute before I shut her off
ps ride was fun, she ran great!79' XS1100SF "Eleven Special" - Black/Gold
