The overall purpose of using a shot of starter fluid is to isolate the problem to fuel or spark. If you have a plug that is not firing, you'll get no response when you give that cylinder a shot of fluid into its carb. If on the other hand its a carb problem, and the plug is sparking but the cylinder is not firing because of a carb problem, it will most times fire breifly when the fluid is introduced to the carb.

Proper troublshooting procedures should be to isolate the problem to the circuit that is at fault first, then isolate the problen within that circuit.

you see guys the problem was the pilot circuit and thanks for the help, but like i said before, with the engine running on 3 cylinders,

i would one by one pull the plug caps, away and each and every time the engine would stumble, indicating that i was the reason the spark was not in that envirorment, when i did it for #1, it did not stumble

this led me to believe no spark exsisted to begin with but now i know that the spark was not there because the air fuel ratio at a given rpm range mainly, off idle did not allow the spark to jump or was weakened.

this cause the filling up of the cylinder and overriching from the enrichment and never allowing the delicate balance of components and events to take place in that cylinder for ignition.

i know, old post, but im having the same issue.... ive been riding it for awhile, and it seems to run great, now that ive gone through most everything, but every now and then there is a hesitation or stumble or whatever. i checked my pipes this morning and #1 was cold. so now i know whats going on, but i think it may only be at idle....
