New stainless are available from various sources but the original pistons are not and they do pit. At least they were on all 3 of mine. I found replacements on Ebay it kits that came with everything needed. I also like to use red rubber grease when reassembling everything. The real key to these brakes is to make sure to completely purge and replace the brake fluid at least every 3 years. It is more often neglected because when the bike is running good why bother.

Its probably been at least 5 years since I purged the brake fluid from the brakes and the white contamination crud shows on the left side looking towards the front. Nothing on the other side.

I remember some time back you were running just one caliper up front if I am not mistaken.

Pete, here is a kit for your bike. Yamaha XS1100 1980 brake piston seals. At the bottom of the page it shows a kit for the rear. If you do one I would do them all as well as changing the fluids. The kits even include the red rubber grease. Another source obviously is Ebay, HVCcycle and the old bike barn. By the way for everyone else following this thread the original calipers were actually chrome plated steel which over time and exposure to moisture absorbed by the brake fluid degrades the chrome and pits form. If you are looking on Ebay they are listed as brakemasters which is the name on the decal in the first picture for powerhouse. They are located in the UK so the shipping will be a bit more but they are excellent kits. I have used them for two of my bikes.

Yes I was bikerphil. I ran 1 caliper for 2 seasons as I thought a rotor might be warped but switched back to the 2 as the caliper was rebuilt and I wanted to ride. That was some time ago.

Ok, so that makes sense why one caliper is corroded and needs rebuilding and the other one is in good shape.
