I have removed them from both of my bikes and the ignition/horn relay (custom mod) lives in it's place. If the situation arises, I will have to do as Deebs suggested.
Guys, I do not believe the headlight device attenuates the high beam when in the "Emergency Mode". It's a simple relay device. You go home with your high beam on.
I won’t argue that because I used the feature just once. If it works as you say, it makes zero sense to engineer that into the motorcycle. My memory tells me the high beam was attenuated.

I read something on the Venture forum about some models having attenuation. The XS650 forum doesn’t seem to address it. My curiosity is piqued. Perhaps I’ll look into this more when I have some more time.

For closure on the Reserve Lighting System I looked at a longer running model, the XS650. The XS650 first got an RLU on the 1977 model. They all work the same. When the low beam fails, the high beam comes on with reduced brilliance. This includes all XS1100 motorcycles. I believe all Yamahas with RLUs work the same way.
