Appie: very funny, you get used to forgetting what the sun looks like and that clouds can be a different colour to grey

LarryM: I am going to make one of the smoke machines, might use a lavender incense stick, only to help me remain calm when I find the smallest of leaks in the most awkward place to get to

Umm....Not truly a one-way valve unless you count putting your finger on it when you squeeze and taking it off as you release. (☉_ ☉)

Just a quick connect air fitting I had rolling round the bottom of my toolbox. (‘-’*)

I'd never recommend hooking this thingy up to an actual air compressor line at ANY pressure. (つ﹏⊂)

BUT wit' that air fitting I can and have connected/used a bicycle pump to slowly move larger volumes of air/smoke. ヽ(~~~ )ノ

        FWIW.... ( •_•)

Carb sync went well and my XS is back under it's SUN/DUST cover and now is mission ready. (^_^)

But I'd like to hang a lantern on what I consider to be a few impor'unt points 'bout doin' the smoke test befOaR syncing.....

        1. If I hadn't caught the upper/lower airbox seal leaking? (O_o)

Would'a been like driving it with the stock/standard jetting fOaR an airbox but having the "airbox drilled out fOaR mOaR air" mod. S'posed to richen up the jets fOaR that mod so likely engine would'a been LEAN. (Bad....) Also, the sync could'a/would'a gone poifectly according to the gauges and left me clueless as to why Imma runnin' lean all of a sudden. (Θ︹Θ)7

        2. No leaks found at the intake boots (4) themselves or the connection(s) to the engine or carbs. (^_^)

IFF there were any leaks on any one or mOaR of the boots or mating surfaces then iffin' the leak wuz small enuf? Sync gauges would'a shown sumpthin' wuz off and prob'ly could'a/would'a did a knee-jerk move and compensated (or tried to...) by tweaking the adjustment screws. Gauges might'a shown all is well but I'd have one or mOaR cylinders suckin' in mOaR air from the outside world than they should. BAD.

        3. Smoke test showed I correctly installed them peskly diaphrams (again....) (^_^)

Iffin I had farked up getting them all into the tiny grooves like they should be? Would'a saw smoke comin' outta the tops of the carbs where the seal wuz bad. Again.... carb sync would'a gone fine wit all gauges showin' the same at idle. Bike would'a ran like garbage- above 4.5 k. Bad...

        4. No smoke comin' outta the 8 (EIGHT!!!!) butterfly shaft seals. \(^_^)/

Common XS wisdom is that iffin' yur butterfly shaft(s) seals is bad then tryin' to sync is a wasted effort, right? I support dat. However...next time I need to sync I'll smoke test again but I'll actuakly blip the throttle from idle all the way to WOT just to be sure....

        5. No smoke leaking from the vent Tees/hoses or float bowls. (^_^)

        Wut....me worry??? ┐(´~`)┌
YES! Same reason upper/lower airbox seal gots to be solid. Why worry about getting the airbox seal right just to introduce an air leak from somewheres else?! Get the same problem- jetted fOaR a stock airbox installed but running as if the airbox been modded to let in mOaR air. Sync gauges show all is well. Bad.....

        6. Choke plungers NOT showing smoke comin' outta them. (^_^)

Yup. Iffin the plunger seals is toast the smoke'll get all up in there as well and blow past'em. Tho...next time I do this I'll actuakly move the lever from off/half/full just to be super sure. Sync gauges and process ain't gonna tell me nuthin' bout nuthin' as far as problems wit' the "cold start enrichment" system. Bad...

        7. Carb to airbox tubes (4) -no smoke from individual cracks or where they "mate" to the air box. (^_^)

Thanks Andreas Weiss!!! Last OEM air box I had was manhandled badly by the PO. Visible cracks and breakage at the air box seals. (PO was likely well on his way to chucking the air box completely to do the "Pod Mod".) Iffin there were any leaks in the individual tubes or the air box connection(s)? That carb would'a had access to mOaR air than the rest. Likely able to knee jerk adjust out the difference(s) with the screws and achieve the poifect sync according to the gauges. Wut would that do to the actual fuel/air ratio inside that cylinder? Don't wanna know..... Bad.

Just to hang that lantern a lil' closer to the whole point? (O_o)

WELL worth it to do a smoke test befOaR doin' a carb sync cuz although a sync is a good thing? ¯\_(⊙_ʖ⊙)_/¯

There's stuff it just won't help you find or deal with properly. ┐(°,ʖ°)┌
