Serial numbers for the 1978 E start with "2H8" .... Is that correct? Never heard of that and I always wondered about this 2H8...

1978 US models start with 2H7. 2H8 and 2H9 VINs are outside the US.

I know about your 2H7 and our 2H9. In all those years I never heard or read about a 2H8 frame or engine number except reading about the 2H8 prefix long ago in the well known list on these pages?

Yamaha lists 2H8 as "Europe" and "Oceania" (mainly Australia & New Zealand but other islands in the south pacific). If you want to take a deep dive, check out one of the Kiwi or Aussie XS11 sites. Though a smaller market, they're pretty hard core about this bike and may have VIN numbers in sale notices. Or perhaps one of our good neighbors down under who partakes in this site can chime in.
