    Those are the originals, the pictures where the pad isn't in the bracket are the ones with the new shims. That picture is a bit deceptive, but that's actually a feature of the shims. The sit flush but have a chamfered shoulder. You can make it out here: https://www.mikesxs.net/yamaha-xs650...0/XS1100E/1978

    As far as I can tell, the new and old shims are nearly identical except being too wide for the pads. I took measurements all over with my calipers (digital measuring tool, not brakes) and that's the only angle they're different in.

        Filing in these area lightly helped in the installation of the rear pads. They should be snug but they can still move back and forth under pressure.
