  • Weeping Sight Glass

Noticed the sight glass is weeping a bit of oil on the bottom. Not a big deal... anyone else use silicone or something to stop it? Or just live with it?

There was a replacement available,2H7-15361-00-00 GAUGE, LEVEL. Not sure if it's still around, though. This is the early part number, and it probably changed.

Nothing you can do really to stop it from leaking without removing the clutch cover. New one is less than $10 at MikesXS. You won't even have to drain the oil if you do the repair with the bike on the side stand.

Looks like you can heat up the cover and press it out & in with a proper socket. I like these for quick checking oil in the summer but they get cloudy and unreadable in the winter. I have to use a heat gun to clear the water vapor away just to check my oil when it gets really cold out.

Has anyone come across a better way to check their oil level than the sight glass? It's a real PITA trying to get mine into the center stand while fully loaded with gear and pulling a trailer!

Deebs, there can't be much room on your sidecar rig to get down there for a look! Any suggestions?

LAB3, very observant. I have to use an Ocean State Job Lot mirror and flashlight to see down there.

Thanks! Something like that shouldn't be too hard to come by.

I am a big fan of the good old fashioned dipstick, but they are few and far between on motorcycles! I didn't realize it was so easy to replace the sight glass. I will add it to the winter maintenance list. Not a big deal pulling that cover, re gasketing, then putting a new glass in.

On another note, probably a whole different thread... but I assume it is normal for these older air cooled bikes to use some oil? I have no smoke or blowby... no sign of oil loss, but I do have to top up every couple rides... a couple glugs of oil to get it where it should be. My old BMW oilhead was the same.

My oil consumption varies. Out on the interstate maintaining a constant speed I'll use maybe 8 oz on a 500 mile trip. On the other hand if I'm making short runs of say 10-15 miles without the engine warming up or running the revs hard back and forth in the Twisties I might use an entire quart in that same 500 miles.

Anyone know the volume before full and low on the sight glass?

Due to residual oil of possible different volumes after draining, it's always best to use the sight glass for accurate levels. In some cases it's worse to put too much oil in.

It is about 1/2 quart difference I think.
