The left is for adjusting preload on the rear shock. Not sure on the right one.

Thanks Ccitis. Only one of the kits had the shock adjusting tool that you have identified. A couple of the tool kits have the item on the right. It's a mystery to me too.

Hi Bob,,,,I faintly remember the other piece is to hang the rear wheel on removal,,the purpose is probably in the owners manual....Mike in S.DIego and Pa.

Socer4m has purpose close. That hook came in original tool kit for Specials. Right side swing-arm has protruding piece for it to hook on. Also the original tool kit came with a small diameter steel cable that hooked on cable and then hooked on upper frame rail making rear brake caliper easier to remove.

BTW, interesting enough, my bought new 81 XS1100 Venturer came with the hook and cable in the tool kit. Thought that was interesting as the Venturer basicly is a Standard and not needed for rear caliper removal. My Venturer tool kit is as it came new and never has been used.

I found that wire hook came with the special models...
but is not shown with the standard models that came with the cable and special tool for removing the rear axle.
So, at least I know it goes in the special tool kit, But what I haven't figured out is what the wire hook is used for. Not that I'll ever use it, just curious.
Any Guesses?

They used to give great thought to tool kits with bikes. Now, you are lucky if you get one allan key with a bike lol.

I have the hook tool in mmy SG tool kit in the plastic seat storage. I will have to see what it is used for in my shop manual.

The shock adjustment spanner can also be used on the two ring type nuts on the steering stem.

I've always trusted the 45 year old brake hose to do that.
