  • 1979 special edition - Fork Seals

I ran into quite a few issues with fork seals on this bike. I tried 2 different aftermarket kits (Bike Master and the one Old Bike Barn sells) and neither would work. They were too thin so I 3d printed a spacer to make them sit flush, but still every time I would have to press them in with a hydraulic press to try to get it to seat. This resulted in stripping rubber off all around the sides. I know these are meant to be tight but if it's tearing rubber off then it's obviously too tight.

After poking around for a while I found a pair of NOS Yamaha seals. They are almost exactly the height of the aftermarket seal + my printed spacer and are slightly smaller in diameter. The 37x49.8/9.5 size listed many places around the Internet is NOT correct for the 1979 special edition. The correct size is 37x48x12.5. Wanted to make a thread about it to save anyone else building one of these the time and money.

You may have seals for a Standard, which are a different size than the Specials.

The correct size for the Special is 37x48x10.5

    The Standard uses 37X49X8
    2H7 (79) owned since '89
    3H3 owned since '06

      Uhmmm......(O_o)

But whut method are you using to assemble/install everyhting? ( ´・_・`)

I mean there's the "Faktory Method" which usually cuts the FARK outta the seal cuz of a razor sharp edge... (Ő︵Ő)

      and then there's THIS one-

XS 11 Standard models us KYB front forks and XS 11 Special models use Shoiwa forks. As previously stated, fork seals sizes are different for each of the two models.
