I ran into quite a few issues with fork seals on this bike. I tried 2 different aftermarket kits (Bike Master and the one Old Bike Barn sells) and neither would work. They were too thin so I 3d printed a spacer to make them sit flush, but still every time I would have to press them in with a hydraulic press to try to get it to seat. This resulted in stripping rubber off all around the sides. I know these are meant to be tight but if it's tearing rubber off then it's obviously too tight.
After poking around for a while I found a pair of NOS Yamaha seals. They are almost exactly the height of the aftermarket seal + my printed spacer and are slightly smaller in diameter. The 37x49.8/9.5 size listed many places around the Internet is NOT correct for the 1979 special edition. The correct size is 37x48x12.5. Wanted to make a thread about it to save anyone else building one of these the time and money.
Difference in thickness, Yamaha on the left Bike Master on the right
Thickness with my spacer
Diameter difference, Bike Master on the left, Yamaha on the right
