    Mike, I would say the tach would be the most sensitive device to noise/ bad ground on the bike and would be the first to show an issue. It's a possibility. I guess it could still be in the stator. Maybe also try a spare main voltage regulator for "clean" power. Maybe one of the diodes in the bridge is acting odd and not quite rectifying.

        You DO NEED good grounds for everything to work properly. Electrical problems on older bikes are almost always a ground issue. Go through, clean every ground wire and screw on the bike and see if that helps.

          Yes, but in order for it to do so it must also have power and ground. Clean power and ground.

              It absolutely adds stability. Positive and negative are the reference points of the signal wave. If they are off or unstable (changing) the coordinates will be off.
