Can someone take a picture of how the fuel tank is mounted by the seat? I have an 80 SG that I believe the piece was tack welded and broke off. I basically have a bolt that goes through the rubber grommet and a thick spacer and it kind of rests there. Since I work in a steel factory and am certified flat position MIG welder, I can weld this. I might still have the piece to weld.I just have to know what it looks like.

I think this part being tack welded came off. I just have to look for it.1980 XS1100 SG

I found the part, it was on the grommet itself as I have a threaded bolt that goes through it. There is no tack weld whatsoever holding it on. I looked at it very closely. What holds it on?1980 XS1100 SG

I assume you are talking about the threaded post that goes up through the flat bracket piece that is welded to the frame? If so, it's hard to see up underneath there, or to get a good clear picture. But here it is for what it's worth. I circled two spots that looks like the underside of the post is tack welded at 10:00 and 2:00 o'clock and probably one or two more spots that doesn't show in the picture. Hope this helps.

Ranger-yes thanks for that pic. I have the threaded post and its very lightly tack welded froim the factory on mine. I can tack it with the MIG gun after I clean up the area, but would tack it on top as underneath not too much room and working against gravity. I need a spacer so my Pingel petcocks don't hit anything. Been pouring here in NJ and just waiting on that one nice day to ride. Thanks for the pics everyone!1980 XS1100 SG

I'm now thinking that the threaded post maybe can get by without taking it in place. The bolt that goes through the grommet will keep that threaded post from falling out-correct? I will need to buy a new bolt as the one i used has seen better days.1980 XS1100 SG

You could probably save yourself some grief by doing it "quick and dirty" by tacking in place on top then cutting away a small chunk of the grommet to clear the weld.1980 XS1100G
