So the Pilot jets came yesterday from Partszilla and they don't have any holes like the ones in my SG do. They look actually shorter than the current ones. Still having the issues that the #4 pipe doesn't get hot as the others. #4 pipe gets hot on choke then doesn't maintain the heat. Since I got popping mostly out of # 4 carb could the air jets on the front of the carb be clogged? can they be removed? I have never removed them before. Many years ago I had a shop around 1988 install a Dynojet recalibration kit in the carbs. Should the pilot jets be different then? The stock pilot jets are 42.5. I will look what is in there now.

My guess is that if Dynojets where put in it they'd be different than stock. How much different, who knows but my best guess is it wouldn't play well with the other three carbs if it where returned to stock jets.

Stock pilot jets should have 6 holes in the shaft like this. With a tiny hole in the end.

      Not 8 holes like this.

I have no idea what a dynojet should have.

Have you run a cylinder compression check? I'm thinking the valve shims on the #4 might be tight. To state the obvious, Did you carefully inspect the intake manifold for cracks or leaks. Are the clamps tight?

The Dynojet kit has all the jets except the pilot jet which should be the 6 hole genuine Mikuni. There was a discussion some time ago about the no side hole pilot jet and IIRC, it worked just fine in place of the 6 hole.

I also remember the older discussion about the side holes.

I also remember that the side holes didn't seem to do anything... and it was OK if there were no side holes.

I just know the pilot jet size in the K&L kit I bought were wrong and they looked like this (thanks red bandit):

I had a cylinder running cold (not firing). It was the spark plug lead (wire) / cap. You need to check this item. Stan H.

I think that TC solved the pilot jet bleed hole mystery back when he was sawing carb bodies in half with his band saw...good info for anyone who has never seen it, good refresher for those who have.

The nozzle end of the 6 hole pilot jet (BS type) and the 8 hole (VM type) are different and so is the jet hole size...

So today took everything out of #4 carb-Idle mixture screw-tip are good, emulsion tube cleaned and wiped down and air blown through holes, Pilot jet cleaned out and holes blown through, main jet cleaned and holes blown through, rubber diaphragm not ripped, and needle wiped down. When I took the pilot jet out, I used a q-tip to clean out that area. Air jet cleaned out. Float height set to 23 mm.-all passages cleaned out.

How about the rest of the carb body? The best way to make sure you've got the carbs thoroughly clean is to soak them in a chem dip such as Berrymans Carb Dip or Gunk. I've had some success in boiling them in a 50/50 mix of water and Pinesol.

If you cannot boil them, at least use the B12 Chemtool spay can and tube to verify all of the carb is clean. I spray into every passage and look for it to exit. Wear safety glasses!
