  • Big Mistake...Please advise

Total noob. Went to change the oil today and drained the middle drive oil instead of engine oil.
Long story short, bike ran for about 1 min. Smoke everywhere and oil leaking from air box valve.

I drained the oil, cleaned out air box
Tomorrow I’ll be purchasing oils for both engine and middle drive.

Question how much damage did I do?
will it be safe to start the engine .

If you only ran it for a minute it'll be alright. Just oil overfill exiting the engine. Middle gearbox should be alright too as long as it wasn't ridden hard. It takes a lot of abuse to fook an engine.

Use a new or very good allen wrench on the middle drive!! If it does not want to turn, try heating a little bit with a heat gun or propane torch. You want the case warm, and the bolt cold so it will start turning a little easier.
Do pick up synthetic 70-140 gear oil for the middle drive. We proved a long time ago that it kept the heat down. Less heat, less friction and less wear.

        Thank you all.

Both engine and middle drive oils replaced. To manual specs. Ordered new air filter, the one in the now is a bit oily from my disastrous debacle.

Took a few turns to get the machine to fire up.

Smoke was coming from exhausts, but went away after a couple of slow loops around my block.

Let the the machine rest for a few hours, started Up, but still smoking. I let it idle for about 3 minutes and smoke went away. No seepage anywhere. Engine is dry.
I imagine it is residual oil from the large quantities I mistakenly put in the crank case

Take a longer ride and it should totally clear up.

Yep, high 70's here at midnight. BTW, what is a limited edition? It says that in your signature.

Here is the picture of the badge. Possibly an aftermarket build? VIN number reflects base trim

With the color, I would guess Bob Jones had a hand in that bike. Check the rear shocks for a sticker from Merriam Cycles.

Mike, look at the tank, it has the same "logo". Karla may remember if Bob did something like that for a "touring" look machine.
