You should touch base with BA80... Greg Teter. He is trying to give away several engines. He stated that he will not ship ... but anything can be worked out if the need is there.

Sorry you ended up on the long road.

However, I appreciated staring at your picture for awhile to better understand the inner workings of the engine.

Good luck with your next move.

I'll have an engine case in about two months, I hope~ My '78 has a replacement engine that broke a gear in the trans. I'm going to rebuild the original case, and pull that one out. I do NOT know what the condition is, but it does not have a spun bearing... I may also have some new old bearing left over once I'm done. Send me a PM later, and we can try and figure something out.

Forgive my lack of understanding of what I am looking at in the pic that shows the spun bearing?

It is kind of hard to see with the low-res picture and weird angle but you're looking at the upper case half so #5 is on the far left with the taper for the alternator rotor.

Thankfully, I have a spare engine. When I pullled the pan I found a few foil flakes and obviously had to find the source. The first sign of trouble appeared when I inspected the alternator and noticed that the rotor had made contact with the stator. Curiously, there was no oil leaking past the seal even though the spun bearing had galled, scorched and deformed the bearing journal significantly. Anyone who has had to split the engine case knows this takes a while, but at times it is necessary. Too bad, because everything else is in pristine condition and now I won’t have a VIN match any longer.

Well, that's a bummer, at least you have a spare engine!

Splitting cases isn't too bad except for pulling the alternator rotor.
I've done it a few times to put in new o-rings, oil seals, and check the bearings and gears on the workbench bench before I put the engine in the frame, then discover it has to come out.
I did that one time too and I won't do it again....

Steverk Not sure of your plans but if you are going to toss that engine as a carcus I can't help but notice the drive dogs are in good shape on the transmission. I'd have an interest in the transmission gear array to rework an undercut on the dogs on a spare set. I'm in no rush so if you need to evaluate what's in your spare before you decide it won't be an issue for me.

                    Bax,

For now I am going to hang on the parts, as I want spares as well. Ping me again in a few months as I have a 3rd engine that I have not looked at yet. I want to make some progress with my project first.

Not even remotely. (buff nails on well-worn old leathers)

                              At least Bax caught it!

And his transmission didn't lock up at speed going downhill like a certain Moderator's or lose all the final drive gear oil, then seize-n-skid along Lake St and leave 50' of rubber in front of the Santa Cruz PD station.
