  • I've been using Mobile 1 pretty much from day one, 22 years. I DID change to dino oil on this last oil change as some folks have suggested that it would help with the slipping starter clutch. The starter has been acting the same way for the 22 years I have owned the bike, so I have no idea if the Mobile 1 oil has contributed to the problem or not.

I have not had any issues with my bike's clutch that I am aware of. We shall see if I notice any difference.

I have used Castrol Syntech 5- 50 in my motorcycles for as long as Syntech has been out and find the engines to be much quieter and run a lot cooler than with non synthetic oils. Used Shell Rotella T in one motorcycle years ago and had pistons collapse several times. Switched to Castrol and problem stopped just like that. Have never had clutch slippage and my XS1100 is bored to 1200 which increases the horse power by quite a bit.

        • Started using Castrol 20-50 about 6 months ago. Haven't ridden much because of the weather. Rode a couple of hundred miles this weekend and had to add oil 2 times. Has anybody else had similar problems?

You had to add oil twice in 200 miles?? Sounds like you've got a huge oil leak somewhere. Do you notice oil dripping out anywhere when parked? Are you checking the oil level while the bike is on the centerstand, or the sidestand?? If the sidestand, you have massively overfilled the oil, and it's probably being pushed out the vent holes.

            • Definitely not the fault of the oil! Have had great luck with Castrol 20-50.

                    • In grammar class we learn of things like prefixes, suffixes and root words. Well, the root word in amsoil is soil. Which is what it is. Its just regular oil with lots of hype added, which is where the soil part comes in. I bet I have replaced 30 engines in my life due to the BS that amSOIL reps spew. "You never have to cange the oil, just the filter" or "You only have to change the oil every 25 thousand miles." Total crap. They say that but don't have any answers when the bearings and crank looks like someone threw sand in the motor. Try getting amSOIL to pay for an engine that obviously died because their oil went tits up and left the engine spinning on acidified soot and sludge, and they laugh at you saying they have no liability in the matter. When the rings are so worn out the compression won't even register on a gauge, they say its the airfilter's fault.

I have no doubt its quality oil, but it doesn't live up to all the lies they propagate. If you change it on time, its probably just as good as any other oil out there, but it isn't superman.

What do I use? Anything that's cheap and isn't in a pennsoil (root word again) bottle. So far the parts stores have been carrying Castrol or valvolene MC oil at the same prices as their normal oil, so I use it.
