    cam chain tensioner

Just measured depth inside the tensioner hole after removing the plug - 12mm - does this sound ok? A past thread said 20mm means no more adjustment available and 14.6mm would be for a properly adjusted new chain. There was some oil behind the plug. Would this indicate needing to check any further for a leak?
Also, does it matter if you do the adjustment before or after checking the valves? Thanks everyone.

Dean, did you measure after you adjusted the chain?

      Hi Randy.
Haven't done anything yet except to pull out the plug to measure
      that depth.

Okay, so first adjust the chain. Then take a look at the depth. I'll bet you get a big movement

Lined up the timing plate mark, loosened the bolt, retightened and it now measures 17mm, even though I didn't hear anything move or shift.

Neglected to mention that the timing plate had to be rotated (clockwise) almost the whole way around, maybe aound 320 degrees. Any significance to that?
