      • DUH! I should have checked. It's the same clutch as the XS650. Therefore, Mike's XS has the lock washer.

          • Tranny Again?

In any case, 30000 miles and no forseeable tranny problems. Yes it clunks worse than the CB750 when shifting into first, but so?

                  Hey TC,

My '80 Std only has 19K on it and was at 15K when I bought it.
My newly acquired XJ has 31.7K on the clock.
Very happy to report neither has tranny issues.

                  • My first 79 had issues at 15k +\- (miles), I think it had been ridden hard. At that time, '89, I was on my own and having just rebuilt a tranny in a Massy tractor figured the xs wouold be no problem. It wasn't, just the price of the new gears.

My latest special clunks a little but still feels solid and stays in gear. Has about 25 k miles on it right now.

                    • My '78 E will pop out of 1st once in a while if I get on it out of the hole. I had been assuming I didn't get it in all the way. I don't baby the shifting - this just started happening in the last 1000 miles or so.

                      • Probably a stretched clutch cable instead of a trans. problem.

if i dont run the bike for several weeks i have noticed a problem when i , pull it in several times when running and when i attempt to put it in 1st gear and it jumps, like i dont even have the clutch pulled in after several attempts of doing this it finally works it way back to normal, what do you think could cause this problem, i am running mobile 1 syntehtic oil in it, the cable is new and no problems after this occurs when riding

Lose the synthetic oil, stick to heavy conventionals.

I like to use Shells Rotella-T, i think it comes as 15W-40 (?) - but I like it cause it's the closest oil formula available on todays market which resembles the stuff which was available back in the late seventies.

                              Best,

                              • Hey Rizzo,

I won't go into oil types, you can read the threads and tech tips and come to your own conclusion.

However, aside from the new cable, have you done the adjustment procedure for the engine side cover/clutch lever?? Sounds like it's not set right, and so it's not totally disengaging the plates, so you get the grinding affect!? The procedure is in the tech tips.
