okay i put in around 200 miles on the old f and as far a transmission, it does slip out of second gear when i'm going very slow and just cruising it,trice, otherwise no problems with it slipping out wihile speed shifting,

i don't know much about transmmissions, but i did find a false neutral between 4 and 5 a coupla times, then it would be hard to shift in all gears for a while, until i'm able to get off the freeway and let the rpm's go down a bit and i think that resets some things and the shifting smooths out. maybe i'm wrong here

i would sure hate to have big tranny problems, i want to spend my time and money beautify it rather that repairing it,

but show me a 79 anything, that can perform like this for not alot of money,.

          XS Tranny Service Bulletin
.. while sitting in the garge for the past two days, contimplating a different approach to fixing the first gear problem, i think that i have found it.. not the actual bulletin, but what the bulletin may be about ["i think i have seen the bunnies again George"].. while it is not hard to implicate, it is not real easy either, you still have to remove the shaft and gear cluster.. if your trans is junk already this mod will help after you replace the parts that are bad, but maybe not before.
.. i will know more about how well it works by the time i make it to WV next week, if i can make it []
at this moment it is still a money thing, but i have some and the plan is in motion.
i hope it stops raining up there soon

I don't have any issues with my trany now but wnat to avoid issues in future. I am referring to my back up hop up engine. I think the last owner of this bike harleyed it for lack of a better description.
Myself I do give 2nd gear a workout on a regular basis because I like to be on the edge of the power band when riding. Given the speed limit on surface streets that means I'm in 2nd gear a lot.

              My XJ100 has 13,000 miles

Its hard to get it into first unless the RPM is below 1000 when cold, however when the oil warms up, and presumably some metal expands, its fine.

There is something about viscosity that influences this problem I can't put my finger on...

The XJ550 I just sold had 55k, it would slip out of second into neutral at the worst moments.

I tend to try to stay out of second as much as possible, and tend to use 4th more often, to spread the stress over the assembly evenly.

                  Tranny problems

My 78 Standard has the first gear problem, but you wouldn't know unless you really accelerated hard in first gear. I have n't had it pop out of gear for a long time because I know it's there and ride around it. It doesn't seem to be getting any worse, as I first noticed the problem many years ago. The bike clunks pretty loudly going into first from neutral but I assume they all do that.

                        • Battle Cruiser evidently has had the second gear fix twice. Once by the PO and again this year by me. PO had done the washer reverse on 2nd and it apparently works very well because the dogs on 5th were almost round and still only coming out of second occasionally. After I replaced 2nd and 5th, I left the washer on the reverse.

                          • I have had a 80- XS1100G std since new. I got in the habit of "Short Shifting" or skipping 2nd & 4th gears. This worked for 20 years and then shifting degraded. Problem was a bad coil which made the engine run rough. Finally replaced coil and shifts were OK. Sometimes will jump out of 1st or get false nuetral in 2-3 shift. I now shift thru all gears. Keep the engine in proper tune and shifting will be at its best.

                            • I have a 79 XS1100F Std I bought for a parts bike, but now have a good running bike @ 40 K mi. The bike had the 5th gear blues when I got it, no 5th gear. I replaced the shift drum outside end metal plate w/fingers and missing dowel. About 8K mi later I had poor shifting into 1st with bad noisy neutral, and finally no 5th gear.
Problem was bent finger on shift drum metal plate again, which I rebent and fixed.
Now 200 mi later, hard shifting into 1st or noisy nuetral. Probably 5th gear will be missing soon.

Has anyone had this as a reoccuring problem? What is bending out the finger on the shift drum end plate? Do I need to do a shift pawl alignment? The alignment marks are correct as per the Service Manual.
