    Tranny problems Poll

    Can't vote yet.
Don't think tranny is worn. Have had it pop out of 2nd a few times, but never happened until I dumped it. The shifter looks ok, but if the shaft were bent slightly probably couldn't tell w/o taking it apart. (less than 18000 on bike)

If I am conscientious about my gearing and road speed I usually don't have any hard clunks or slippage, but when I am riding hard or not really paying too much attention, then I notice more probs...

        Hey MRO,

Check out this thread, it shows some pictures about performing the shift pawl alignment, which might have gotten knocked out of position with the "drop"?
        Shifting Problems Thread

        Hey Skids,
Well, I used to have weak ankles, sprained them many times in my youth, but at least I don't have limp wrists!! When riding it in my boots, the shifter is in good position for good shifting leverage, but when wearing street/tennis shoes, the shifter is a little higher, have to pull up further with toes for proper shifting action.

There wasn't a spot on the poll for my issue - 79 Special - Lost Fifth Gear. Semi easy fix though. Replaced the Washer after putting the pin back in. (Had to fish that out of the oil pan)

I just got an XJ1100 (28000 miles) off of Ebay that slips in first and second. The previous owner says he replaced all the gears and forks with ones from a low milage one but it didn't fix the problem. I'm going to be flipping it over and taking a look and will probably try the black and decker fix and maybe the washer switch and see if that does the trick. This is my first post, so thanks to everyone for sharing the info and being willing to help. This is a great site.

BTW, I've bought the cd and got the service manual for the XJ, but does anyone have the user manual? I found a link here to a site that archived it, but haven't been able to get a response from the owner for a password to download it.

                Thanks,

                Tom

Finally voted, my 80G was popping outa second for a while after I dumped it, but lately it's shifting just fine.

Either I was "lite foot" shifting for awhile or it fixed itsself

Rusty, my '79 Special has no problems jumping out of gear but it is difficult to upshift quickly (characteristic of these bikes I assume). Downshifting is quick. I have found that upshifts can be made quicker without the clutch. A lazy foot will find a false neutral between any gear. The bike has very close to 60,000 miles on it now. Dunno if the tranny has been worked on in the past but I kind of doubt it.

Amen to Upshifting problems and Don't try to Ride the Battle Cruiser hard wearing Running Shoes, you'll bust toes on the upshifts!!! I am trying to find the much trumpeted Valvoline MC oil in my area. A lot of the threads point at it as a partial solution to the vicious XS tranny.

And it ain't just the tranny, there's a lot of slop in the driveline. That, coupled with the hair trigger off-idle throttle response had me feeling like a novice at parking lot speeds. I was dabbing my feet a lot until I was told (by a Harley rider, no less!) to ride the rear brake a bit to take up the driveline lash. My tranny seems a little smoother since I switched to Shell Rotella T, clutch is grippier too.

                            similar to XS650Mike...

No problems jumping out of gear, but I have found more false neutral's (between 3&4) under hard accel than I care to admit to.
Bike has about 15k for mileage

I'm kinda coming to the conclusion that when I hit a false neutral in the upper gears its because I don't let the shifter return to the center position, that is is I keep a little upward pressure on it. Not a very good feel to the center postion on these bikes. If I concentrate and make sure I pivot my foot down enough, the shifting is ok.

.. well i guess i qualify for another response to this post. about two days after discusing with Steve something about altering the
holes in the sliders of our carbs, i was on my way home from work when i desided to pull out in front of a slow moving car and blast out of site (i do this kind of often, makes me feel like a man or something), something out of the ordinary happened this time. i pulled out and punched it and at about 6000rpm's it popped out of gear, this made me react like i had put the brakes on or something. so when this happened my left foot smashed the shifter up into seconed gear, and smash is kinda what it sounded like. most of the way home first and second gears worked but it felt like something was not quite right and second was popping out at around 5000rpm's now. at about one mile from home something new had occured to me, first and second gears were now replaced with neutal, and now my bike is a three speed. can't waite to see what that looks like.
.. for your poll= first and second gears out at together
