  • Building bowl outlet nipple for clear tubing...

    Howdy XSives,

Was there once a thread on how to attach clear tubing to the float bowls to check actual fuel levels? I need to construct some sort of nipple that I can attach clear tubing to. Has anyone else done this? I was thinking perhaps of getting some replacement drain bolts, drilling a hole in them, and soldering some sort of tube to the bolt....

I am trying to dial in a new set of carbs and want things exact. The carbs are the '79sf models.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Perhaps a vague question here, but with a stock '79sf with 137.5 mains running at 5700ft elevation, what would be a good (leaner) main jet number to start with and does Yamaha still stock them?

      Try Mike's XS for jets

      Here's the link:

      http://www.mikesxs.com/mikesxs-page12.htm

      They are $2.00 each.

Mike specializes in the XS650, but many of the parts are interchangable with the XS11.

        Thanks John.

Now I just need to find out how to get a fuel nipple setup for the float bowls.

I found that a brake bleeder screw with the right thread pitch and diameter works perfect. I found them at napa for just a couple of bucks each. I can't recall but I think the thread was something like 8x1.25 or something, best to double check. I used a grinder to grind off the tapered part on the end of the threads and the length was just right, doesn't contact the main jet at all. Hope this helps and good luck on the jetting. Finding a dyno and getting a baseline after you set the float heights, timing, valve clearance, etc. will give you a good idea as to where you need to go with the jets. Hope this helps and good luck

That sounds like a better idea to me than drilling a bolt and soldering. I guess like you indicate, the trick is getting the right bleeder screw. I'll check into that immediately.

              Hello,
My suggestion would be get a set of float bowls of a 1981 xs1100. They already have the nipple to attach the tube. Someone on the list should have a spare set that they will part with. Otherwise you would need to do some machining on the bowl and install something similar to a brake bleeder screw. Once again, just use the factory 81 float bowls. I believe the 1980 models had the nipple also.
              Good luck.

                Hi Bill,

I think Jeremy found bleeder screws that fit in place of the float bowl drain screws. The bleeder screws would not be permanent - just temporary.

If someone had spare bowls with the nipple outlets I would certainly try to go that way. Otherwise I'll try to just use the bleeder screws method without machining the bowls themselves.

You're right, the bleed screws are just temporary to set the height and then replace with the drain screws and you're good to go. BTW, it has been my experience that the float bowls with the drain tube built in do not fit the earlier carbs, I have both styles laying around and that is why I had to go with the bleed screws. The early and late float bowls mount the same and share similar deminsions but the little pick up tube that is in the carb body and extends down into the bowl is located in different places on the early and late carbs. Hope this helps.
