  • Yamaha service manual omission

I looked through the Yamaha XS1100 factory service manual and can't find the amount of gear lube that goes into the final drive.
I suspect it's something like the middle drive, 4.4 oz. when filling after complete draining, 3.5 or 3.3 oz. when just changing, odd ?
Nowhere can I find the number of ounces for the final drive, changing, complete filling when drained.
    Just interested.
    Can anyone answer please ?

I have both an XJ and Xs manual. They agree that the final drive holds 0.32 US quarts but the middle drive amounts differ: 0.396 qts for the XJ and 0.38 qts for the XS although I'm not sure that's a measurable difference. I always go to the full line on the factory dipstick.

Thank You Billy ! I have the Mechanics factory manual, I find the engine and middle gear oil amounts but not the final drive. If it's in there would you be willing to tell me what page in the XS manual ?
I have the SH, H and LH with supplements.

        Page 2-11 of the Genuine Yamaha XJ 1100J manual, it says;
Final gear case: Approx. 0.30 L (0.26 Imp qt, 0.32 US qt)

I fill it to the bottom of the filler hole threads and call it good.

          CZ, Thanks !
          That seems very full ?
Maybe cut down on (what do they call it?) frothing, foaming, aerating ?
Do you do the same with the middle gear unit ?
Did Yamaha leave this measurement out of the XS1100 manual ?

In Yamaha Manual 1st edition XS1100 same information on page 2-13

Oil will blow out of the top if you overfill.
Use the dip stick provided in tool kit......40 + years ago
Dip stick was still available from Yamaha.....10 years ago.
I like CZ fill to threads for final drive.
Always remove filler cap before removing drain cap.

Don't fill the middle drive up to the threads, there will be waaay too much in there.

                  Haynes/Clymers

                  Thank You All !
Maybe Haynes/Clymers had the amount listed for the final drive, I used to have all three.
Still the measuring tool will work.

                    Quoting from the same source;
Middle gear case: Approx. 0.375 L
                    (0.33 Imp qt, 0.396US qt)

Recommended oil: SAE 80 API Hypoid gear oil.
SAE 80W90 may be used for all conditions

                    GL-4, GL-5, GL-6 ratings are all approved.

Yamaha doesn't always present information in the places we would expect.
It is probably in there, just not where you would first look.

I would HIGHLY recommend using 75-140w synthetic oils in both middle drive and final drive as opposed to the old school recommended oils. I found years ago that the 75-140w syn. reduced final drive temps. by 15 degrees after riding an interstate testing some 150miles@ a constant 80mph. Testing both choices for same distance,G.Junction, Colo. to Green River, Utah. Royal Purple was and is my syn. choice. Do NOT use same weight choice for synthetic! 80-90w synthetic oil does NOT have the same cling factor nor 'pound out' factor using equivalent conventional choices! If using 80-90w syn., it WILL cause an early demise of final drive bearings! Remember, heat IS equal to friction!

                          Dip stick

is no longer available though I just found one on ebay for 18 dollars.
I guess in the past I just added then checked with the dipstick, added/checked then again until I got it right, or as was said it's in the book somewhere ?

Done, I did the same this fall, add the lube and check with the dipstick that was in my original tool kit. I made sure the bike was on the level and standing straight.
