Check the secondary on the coils as well. The spark plug caps are supposed to be 5K Ohms each, so with the caps on you should get about 17 to 22K ohms reading. I would check the caps, as they are prone to opens that will lead to no spark. New caps ARE available, and if you buy the "non resistor" caps, just put in modern iridium plugs.

I checked the secondary wires again on the coils (20k setting on ohmmeter). There is no reading whatsoever coming from the secondary on the first coil while the other coil secondary has a resistance of 10.93 Ω (down from a reading of 11.12 Ω taken just three days ago). Also, I got no reading from the caps (while they were still plugged in the wires). Did I test the caps correctly?'81 XS11LH

Unscrew the caps from the wires and put one lead on each end of the cap. Make sure you have contact with the metal parts inside, the threads on the wire side and the metal clip on the spark plug side.
If you are getting "new" coils, replace the caps! like most things on these bikes, age is a factor.Ray Matteis

Here is a link for two of the caps:https://www.mikesxs.net/ngk-spark-pl...bow-xb05f.html
It's the same thing, just less money. The inside caps are a different set-up, but you can use 4 of these.Ray Matteis

Good advice as always.
To match original style i ordered NGK Caps 2 of LB05F and 2 of YB05F
The first letter denotes the angle....but i forget now what the 2 angles are.
Phare Est,
I recommend you stay with NGK, like originals. You will need new wires from the coils unless the coils already come with them. May as well change the plugs too....while i'm spending your money
US prices are tempting but factor in exchange and freight before hitting the buy button. NAPA or autopart store in your town should have these.

Good info. Were the carbs cleaned and freshly put on the bike when taken out of storage? Or cleaned then reinstalled on the bike and had fuel in them over the remainder of the winter?
Was the resistance of the coils measured when hot or cold? I.E. after a ride or with the bike sitting overnight, that kind of thing. Hot coils probably will show more resistance than cold coils all else equal.
I gather it is the same multimeter used both times? The fact one coil shows no secondary resistance is good reasoning that it needs replaced.
Also post #4 mentions a fuel pump, how did you check that?Howard

BTW, ZRX carbs have the same spacing as the XS11... http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35462

The carbs were cleaned a couple of weeks before the bike was taken out of storage. The fuel was drained from them when it was put in storage last November.
The bike was cold when I took the readings on the coils (both times). And yes, I did use the same ohmmeter.
As for the fuel pump, I'm quite sure it's working as it should because there was fuel in all the float bowls when I checked. I did notice a smell of gas coming from the exhaust this season, which wasn't there last year. Would that indicate that the spark plugs are only firing intermittently?'81 XS11LH

Thanks for answering my questions, you definitely have gone through things.
However, I don’t believe any XS11 bike has a fuel pump...Last edited by Bonz; 05-17-2019, 02:03 PM.Howard

Howard, I think he's looking at the Octy as a fuel pump, and not a vacuum cutoff switch.
Big thing is he said "no electrical power at all", probably the main fuse on top of the tool box/under the seat. Remember we had to replace one at the Durango rally?Ray Matteis

LOL, I remember well that fuse replace at “kickstands up” in the United campground in Durango on JWHughes’s burnt orange “Texas Longhorn” color bike. Didn’t you guys rewire something or replace the fuse holder itself? You guys caught back up with the other half of us after a few hours while we waited in the shaded area of city park in Dolores, Colorado.
I was having a little fun, I am wondering how to check a fuel pump, say it is working, when there isn’t one? I was thinking the same thing about the octy, that was quite a contraption they came up with on the engineering side of the Yamaha factory!
No offense intended, Phare Est, just got a chuckle from it.
Ray, is there any chance you could make Durango this year for the Rally?Howard

I'd love to, but no running bike, and I'll be in the middle of selling the house! I will be in Boise, ID by the end of September. Next year should be easy to make.
The fuse holder was a 12 gauge model with a 30A. blade fuse. just had to crimp it onto the old wires.Ray Matteis

I was referring to this part: https://www.partzilla.com/product/ya...H3-24520-01-00. Which I now know isn't an actual fuel pump 😁.'81 XS11LH
