i agreed with your post. i think im doing what you guys suggest and im sure the multimeter is fine, hardly ever use it and its a year old. ill check it out and see to be sure

You're doing fine, even excellent!
Almost all of the electrical system should be completely dead when the ignition switch is off. Before you remove the fuel tank, just pull all of the fuses except the Main fuse, then hook up the battery to see if anything is clicking.
If nothing clicks, put the fuses back in one at a time.-- Scott

Do the headlight and the tachometer work?
Does the voltage at the battery go up when you run the engine around 2,000 RPM?
In the '78/'79 models, the headlight relay gets its power from the center-tapped Yellow neutral wire from the alternator. IF the ignition switch is good and no one has hacked the original wiring harness, the output isolation diode on the voltage regulator might have failed and the battery is discharging through the stator coils to ground and the headlight relay.
Disconnect the voltage regulator/rectifier and check the diodes.

79sf frame - 81sh engine
You signature indicates you have a 79 sf frame with an 81 sh engine. Do you know which wiring harness you have? The 79 or the 81? I'm not positive but I think there are some electrical differences . Perhaps that information might help electrical guru's here who are trying to help you.Bob's Bikes:

Tachometer was not working yesterday. it bobbled around 0 rpms the whole time.
headlight was not running with key on, but i believe engine has to be on for it to work. ill check tonight. ill also check what happens at 2,000 rpms.Frame: 79 XS1100S

Hey Phil, remember, Scott is almost as old as I am, so without a computer it's hard to read the emails! I know I DON'T do email on the phone for that reason.Ray Matteis

Thanks, Phil, riding is more fun than wrenching any day and, like Ray, I don't do e-mail on my phone if there's any way to avoid it. I got distracted one time trying to ffool with it, now the phone or the data feature gets turned off while I'm on the road.
Pablo, how's the battery, charging, and lighting system doing?
The headlight relay and the tachometer are both connected to the alternator. If the headlight relay clicks when you connect the battery with the ignition off and tach isn't broken -- not a safe assumption -- but doesn't work when the engine is running then the charging system is probably not working either. It's almost as good as having a volt/ammeter or an idiot light.-- Scott

As a temporary fix, I moved the headlight relay to the outside, I wanted to be able to unplug in between rides so the batery wouldn’t drain. It turns out that when everything is plugged in but bike is off and no key in ignition, this thing gets really hot! Is this normal or concern?

Right on! That's one way to fix it.
No, the headlight relay is not supposed to switch on until the engine starts and the alternator begins charging but it will get hot when it's switched on.
To see if it's something simple like a bad voltage rectifier diode you just disconnect the battery, then unplug both connectors for the voltage regulator/rectifier and reconnect the battery to see if the relay still clicks.
The voltage regulator/rectifier has two electrical connectors and it's bolted at the top of the frame underneath the fuel tank right next to the rear fuel tank mount.
