Lookin' good, Kurt.
It's so much nicer to see what we are working on.
I notice how easy and how pleasant it is to work on the bikes I have fixed up compared to the way they arrived.
We are going to see the SECA in September, right?-Mike

(OFF TOPIC) The SECA will be there....

Right now, the SECA is getting some new Shoes!
and some repainting....
It's been a long trip already for the SECA with a failed starter clutch rubbing on the inside of the cases
New Rings and a complete re-gasket of the motor...…
If I could only get the carbs RIGHT (before & after)!
IT WILL BE AT THE VINTAGE YAMAHA RALLY!!!

Back to Pensacola....
XS11 Friends,
This thread has been dormant for a while as I hadn't been doing much on this bike in about a YEAR! Now I'm trying to get this one ready for the VINTAGE YAMAHA RALLY '19 and have done quite a bit lately.
I'm gonna do the "WASHER SWAP" this afternoon so I'm looking around a bit for reminders as I haven't done this in a while...…
Here's an update on the bike.....
Installed the 3.0 Dyna coil upgrade to avoid screwing around with these 40 year old Coils. Used the kit from LEN at XJ4Ever.com. Perfect kit with all the supplies needed to do it RIGHT and quickly.
I also installed the upgrade fuse panel from LEN at XJ4ever as well which includes all the wires properly color coded and ready to install...
Gave it a test start and immediately stripped the frame for the powder coater:
You can see in the coil & wiring photos how BAD this frame really was. It came from PENSACOLA and all that salt air didn't help keep her pretty for 40 years.
Tomorrow is supposed to be a rainy day so I'll be in the garage making some progress. Shame is all the parts going onto this frame are old and everything I bolt on will make the beautiful frame look like crap. Oh well..... Better to start with a clean slate and a perfect (NON MODIFIED) frame.
I'll keep ya'll posted. Here is a mock-up of SORT of what I want this machine to look like when done...…

Making Progress....VYR? Maybe....
XS11 Friends,
I haven't done much on this machine in a while since I've been distracted with the other new addition to my stable the FZR. However, I decided to re-double my efforts on this one...
Haven't really posted since the Powder Coating was done.....
Got the carbs all dialed in this week. Everything is good there and the ColorTune has been completed on all the cylinders to get proper combustion.
Decided to toss the old coils in the trash and avoid the inevitable problems from 40 year old coils. Fitted a new set of Dynas...
I'd probably be driving it but I am struggling with the front brake master.... can't get it to bleed. It has been sitting for a couple years. Probably gonna have to pull it completely apart or just replace it.
I purchased a set of front lines (two hose) and they seem to be a bit long. Not going to be an issue once the fairing is back on just a bit un-tidy.
Pretty Much Ready for final assembly....
But I do need to fabricate some mufflers. I'm sure the neighbors will be happy to hear a set of mufflers vs. open head pipes.
I also have to decide which tank this is going to be getting..... I have a PRISTINE (basically) Standard tank, a repainted standard tank (to perfect match colors) and a tank I'm putting an R1 cap into....
This is an older photo I shared before..... Probably going with this beauty of a tank.
IF I can get some of this done in the next three weeks..... It MIGHT BE at the VYR with the FZR.... FINGERS CROSSED!

Tank Change..... Mufflers Done
Making a LITTLE progress on the '79 XS1100.
I've been able to get a little done on this machine lately. A friend gave me some decals he hadn't any use for and the wheels in my head quickly started turning.....
I've been discussing this with JeffH and trying to decide if I wanted to install these with or without the white background. Kinda figured the black only would be more subdued and fit this RESTO-MOD a little better. Finally decided to include the white and I think it was the better move?
I also managed to get the exhaust finalized and this bike (like all my other XS11's) has HD mufflers fitted. I'm not at all happy with my welding as a recent job change has left me without access to a TIG welder. Had to do this one with my 110v Lincoln. It's solid and sounds great but the welding is PISS POOR to say the least.
NOTE: These MUFFS have been shortened several inches and angled from the original. I BELIEVE there are from what is referred to as DYNA GLIDE (don't know crap about an HD). These are a fantastic option when the OEM Yammies rot away. Plenty of flow and a decent sound.
Anyway.... making a little progress on this one.Kurt Boehringer

Another Project for the Rally?
XS11 Friends,
As if I didn't have enough to do with VYR Planning, Work, and getting the other bikes ready (still not sure which ones are going to VYR), I'm thinking I can get this ole' girl done in time to go to the rally???? Maybe??
Basically, the heavy lifting is done. All the little crap needs to be finished and checked and there are a couple items left to decide on...
Here's what I've been doing the last few nights:
Needed to find some turn signals for the front..... Unfortunately everything I have in reserve is CRAPOLA. Screws breaking in the signal heads (impossible to remove), rusty, missing chrome, f'd wires.... JUNK.
A close friend recently mentioned that necessity is the mother of invention so these RE-PURPOSED FJ1200 signals are now mounted. Only needed a tiny bit of modification. I would have preferred the chrome on this bike but..... NECESSITY!!
I thought I was done with the front end.... BUT I forgot the "Yamaha Trim". During the last painting event I missed this piece. So I had to take the whole world apart to get it finally installed after mixing almost nothing in paint to get it covered. The piece was a rusty mess so painting it body color was the best choice..... Kinda wish my "Made in China" emblem was silver but OH WELL it ain't horrible? Few will see it down there anyway?
Now, I'm concerned about the bars. I REALLY REALLY like these scrambler bars BUT, they are too low for the Sport Fairing..... Looks like $hit...
Unfortunately, they don't make these with a larger rise.... Looks like the Standard XS11 Special "Ape Hangers" (LOL) are going on.... Maybe I can modify them?????
Overall..... She's really pretty close.... Been working on it for YEARS (off & on)..
- Engine is tuned and valves checked. Runs well
- New Tires
- New Brake lines, Master, Pads.
- Dyna Coils
- New Battery
- Modern Fuse Assy. All wiring is done except Aux lamps if I decide to add them.
- Gotta tidy up the tank (cap lock, install the Special level sensor, clean the petcocks)
What do I need to do to it to make it more unique?
Thoughts?Kurt Boehringer

Pensacola is DEAD..... for this week anyway.
XS11 Friends,
Picking up this old thread so you can feel sorry for me! Only kidding. But, the dreaded PO strikes again!!
As you may (or may) have noticed I picked up yet another toy yesterday. I'd been pickin at this Pensacola bike for the last few weeks as I never REALLY got it running AND driving. I want to get this one DONE and ready for VYR 2022, it's been an open project for about FIVE YEARS.
Got 'er all tuned up PROPERLY last week, valves adjusted, carbs color tuned & balanced, and FINALLY got her into gear and around the block. The bike CLEARLY has/had a gearbox issue. Most likely a 2nd gear problem allowed to go far far too long. Decided it was time to bite the bullet and finally fix that darn issue. Pulled the sides off the motor and started inspecting. When I went to pull the oil pump off... UH OH!
The PO had apparently done some of his own attempts at finding the issue. Looks like he didn't properly engage the pump gear and went to cranking on the pump bolts! SNAP broken case at the oil pump.
He used some RTV to attach the piece and put the pump back in place. UGH!!!
Without a new case this motor is a seizure just waiting to happen. A seized engine is never going to happen at a "Good' time like when it's parked in my garage.
Gonna pull the motor and replace the cases. Fortunately, I have spares. Doesn't make much sense putting this back together without at least a hone and new rings. Might as well change the valve seals too as the bike does smoke a little once in a while.
It'll be ready for the Yamaha Rally but it is fighting me all the way!
Discouraged.....

The unknown issues of bringing one back, always some detective work on figuring out why they were pulled from duty... At least you have most of the spare parts and the skills to get it running like a top again. It is a beautiful bike.
A couple of posts up you were looking for suggestions to make Pensacola a bit more unique. If I may, a blacked out engine and carbs with the color you put on the body would look fantastic. Can't go wrong with dark and chrome.1979 XS1100 Special

Sorry for the bad news - part of the challenge, huh?
If you swap the engine cases, don't you need to match the crank bearings to the crank and the cases?
I think I remember you bought a set of bearings once upon a time.
