  • 80/81 carbs

This might be of interest to some. I had to drill out a idle mixture screw on one of my carb bodies but some of the brass threads stayed firmly imbedded in the carbs grooves. I couldn't find the correct reamer in standard tap and dye sets and talked with several tool suppliers like "snap on" etc. and was told they aren't stocked. I gave the problem to my nephew who is a millwright. He promptly measured the jet and special ordered one from his supplier and cut the taper off the bottom and reground the cutting flute edges. It worked like a charm. The spec on this is M6 with thread pitch of 0.5 and a depth of 0.04. I ordered three more and will make them available if anyone else finds themselves in a similar situation.

McMaster Carr. Search for tap 6mm .5 pitch. Best choice is the tap designed for aluminum and brass. Must be hand turned.

          Well

I didn't think $7.00 was out of line, when the alternative is toasting a good carb body. Like I said I had the taper cut off to hit bottom and the flutes reground to pop the brass out of the grooves shoulders. My nephew is a machinist and I showed him what I wanted and why. He never charged me anything because I have his wife's name for Christmas and will buy her something very nice: but, you try to get a custom tool for $7.00. My offer still stands. My intent, with Scott's permission of course, I would send one to 3 Phase and he can mail to whoever needs one and tracks the mailing back and forth so it doesn't get lost. On the other side I will send one to Billyroc for the north eastern US. The goal here is to help one and other. I ask nothing in return.

That Sir is as generous as anyone on any forum could be. Seems Yamaha forums of which XS11 and XS650 (my only experience) have the greatest people involved.
I have a set of LG/LH carbs on/in the corner of my bench with a pilot jet in one carb that will not budge, so I could use one of these tools that afterwards I would make available to whomever needs it on a loan basis.
If this is acceptable where do I send money, address please (Paypal, if so an email address).

              Jets

this is for the idle mixture jet only. However I went to "snap on" and bought a left handed set of drill bits and have removed hundreds of pilot and main jets with them. You should buy yourself a set. They were only about $18 if my memory serves me right. The set also has easy outs with it as well.

I can do that, no problem.

So far (knocks on wooden head) I haven't mangled any carburetor bodies, just pilot jets, but you never know.
