OK guys, I created another problem. I have always kept the fuel Trank full and I’m getting ready for a buddy to paint my fuel tank. I emptied the fuel and my fuel tank looked beautiful inside. Bye then rinsed it out with hot water and a bunch of sludge kind of algae material came out along with a couple leaves believe it or not but other than that the inside the tank look clean like brand new. I told my buddy I was worried about rust or flash rusting And should I pour some kerosene in the tank and slush around to keep it Oily. I was told it would be okay. Well the very next day I went by and looked at the tank and it’s got flash rust all in it. Should I used red cedar vinegar or Metal Rescue ? Has this happened to anyone before? What worked for you?

I had this when i painted my tank. Im not sure how good it is for anything, but i just sloshed some vinegar in and it seemed to clear out ok. I recommend treating with kerosene after to prevent more flash rust. I’ve had good success on several different tanks with Evapo-Rust. It will make the tank shiny and new again but it is bit pricey. However it can be saved and used over and over again multiple times.
After cleaning the tank with Evapo-rust, it should be rinsed and dried thoroughly. (rinsing with acetone works well for removing all residual moisture)...Then after dry, immediately coat with an oil base coating of some sort to prevent re-flashing. I have tried different stuff … fogging oil, WD-40, 2 cycle oil, and even sea foam, all of which seemed to work fine. Fogging oil spray was probably the easiest to use. Allow excess oil coating to drain out.Bob's Bikes:

hard to tell but the tank is full here. about $16.00 for 4 gallons of vinegar, also purchased acetone and oit fog by stabil.79 SF

Depending on whose book you are reading, you will see numbers like 3.9 gal, 5.1 gal, etc.

If you acid etched your tank with vinegar, it will quickly rust again, or you may install a liner.
Yes, a liner will fail if not properly installed. I favor the Caswell epoxy liner. That one is most forgiving and won't fail if done properly. Mess it up and your tank is junk as no solvent will dissolve that epoxy AFAIK.Marty (in Mississippi)
