  • Deleting the TCI

I'm new, very new, so new I haven't even had time to make a proper introduction.
However I thought I'd start off by asking a question I have scowered the forums and the Google box in search of....

Is it possible to eliminate the need for the TCI?

Now the reason I ask is I am completely redoing my bikes electrical system using the motogadget M-unit and a few other upgrades here and there but the one thing I absolutely detest about the bike is the bulky overly complicated TCI system.

I'll make an intro thread and link that for the project and to say hello. I just kept banging my head today trying to eliminate as much useless 80s engineering as possible.

    Thanks In advance

All the ignition is handled through the tci. So unless you found some sort of digital or mechanical way to control the ignition the tci has to stay.

Could it be done? Yes, anything can be with enough time and money. Is it worth the trouble? Probably not.

+1 on what Nate said. The earlier machines, through 1980, COULD be done a little easier, as there was more mechanical in the advance and vacuum. The 81 controls everything through the TCI, so it would be a beast to replace and still have the bike run as it should.
I would just move the TCI to a location that is out of the way, but still in cool air and out of the rain and mud. Under/behind the battery holder is a thought.

Cool cool. Since I have a spare I'll see what I can manage as far as making them more stable, I'm assuming if it's anything like an ECU it shouldn't be rocket science to figure out how to simplify it to a smaller unit.

But thanks for the heads up. Guess back to gutting the old harness it is for now....

Furthermore, does anyone by chance have a schematic (board level) for the TCI, I can see pin outs are easy to find I just want to see if there is a proper diagram for the circuit flow.

Going to get with some friends at DIYautotune to see if we can devise a smarter more stable brain for these bikes

So I talked to friend who works at DIYautotune and he believes with the proper tuning the "Microsquirt" could potentially do the trick. I'll be doing some research and report back

                Thoughts?

MicroSquirt Module is a credit card sized engine management board! This board packs all the features of the MicroSquirt except high current ignition drivers into a 3.5″ x 2.4″ PCB, with all components installed. This tiny ECU opens up unprecedented possibilities – there’s never been a standalone this tiny, or this adaptable. Got a racing series that allows any modification if you can fit in the stock ECU case? No problem! Want to make your own expanded I/O circuit board? Go right ahead – this board already has many of the key features you need for engine management, so simply add your own extra circuits and a connector! The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

Here’s a rundown of the features this ECU has to offer.

                Inputs:

                IAT and coolant temperature sensors
                Throttle position
                Battery voltage correction
                External MAP sensor
Crankshaft and camshaft position sensors (Hall, optical, or VR/Magnetic Pickup supported)
Oxygen sensor (narrow band or wideband w/ external controller)
2 general purpose analog inputs for baro correction, second oxygen sensor, MAF, or knock sensing
                GM flex fuel sensor input
                Outputs:

2 channel injector outputs – works for 2 low impedance or 8 high impedance injectors
                2 logic level ignition outputs
                Fuel pump control
                PWM IAC control
2 general purpose on/off relay outputs (MS2/Extra 2.1.1 allows use as spark outputs for a total of 4 logic level spark outputs)
Several unconnected processor pin connections for building your own circuits

Welcome to channel XS11. Your reengineering of the bike is interesting and I of course wish you the best of luck. It seems that you have a lot of experience that could be applicable.

I'm not familiar with the microsquirt, but I did own a XS11 that I picked-up and parted-out, that had a MegaSquirt with a fuel injection syatem from a GSX-R. The guy had an impressive write-up on here. One of my GS bikes has a Dyna S ignition system that replaced the original system. Ignition curves set. Kind of interesting.

The terminals shown on your diagram are on the right end of the pictured TCI in the top picture. The bottom picture shows the leads from the spade terminals at the point they are soldered to the board. The chart in your post describes where each lead goes in the bikes wiring.
There is a circuit in the TCI that shuts off power to the coils if the engine has not turned over for a few seconds. (The timing is via a capacitor, so the time varies , depending on the condition of the cap). Does the MicroSquirt have that feature?

There have been a handful that have went efi with the microsquirt board. I believe they still used the original TCI though, could be wrong.

I'm not sure, but I do know it's capable of basically cloning any engine management system.

                            Thanks for the info though
